‘Ottawa Collection,’ by Karim Rashid for BoConcept

Egyptian designer Karim Rashid >has created the ‘Ottawa Collection,’ a series of furniture accessories for BoConcept.

The Ottawa Collection includes a complete dining room set with table, chairs, sideboard and cabinet. A light-hearted line of accessories complements the set, creating an entire environment for urbanites.

The minimalist but never ordinary style offers unique features and precise detailing that make each piece hard to resist. The dining table features a soft slanting under-skirting and leg clusters that make it welcoming. Inspired by nature, the dining chair celebrates the welcome simplicity of the leaf that creates an elegant cross-table profile when pushed in, and like the table, sits on a forest of legs, perfect for tucking in your feet. The sideboard has sensual and intuitive handles that are really functional eye candy. Colorful inserts can be used to customize the handles and ends of the sideboard piece.

The cabinet has large graphic easy-to-use handles that add a whimsical element and come in two colors, oak or green. Together, the pieces create an urban environment that is smart and savvy.

Accessories that complete the line include a bold black and white fingerprint rug created to speak about the “new global uniqueness where we are all empowered to express our individuality”, suggests Rashid.

Lik House, Tokyo, Japan by Satoru Hirota

Satoru Hirota architects have completed the ‘Lik House’, a single family dwelling within a residential area
of the business district in Tokyo, Japan. Lik House aspires to be a place of comfortable intimacy, says Satoru Hirota.
Three blocks, laid on the plot with angled trajectories, generate an irregular outdoor space that acts as a private square. The courtyard – a place for both physical and visual interaction – projects the interior into the surroundings.

People moving from one room to another feel as if they’re crossing transitional spaces. Dynamic, slender passages are only arrested by intermittent box-like elements in the interior. Despite its remarkably narrow interior, large openings give the house a sense of openness and transparency and introduce a continuous play of light and shadows.

‘Portrait of the Ghost Drummer,’ Music Choreography by Odaibe

In the video, the movement of a pair of drumsticks is recorded via motion sensors, and visualized in the form of an evanescent, arcing path. The format allows for kinetic patterns to emerge and fade away, evolving in three dimensions as the drummer’s performance unfolds.

Polish artist Odaibe created Portrait of the Ghost Drummer to explore the graphic qualities involved in playing on a drum kit. “Besides being a musician, a drummer when playing is unconsciously engaged in an elaborate choreography,” explains Odaibe. “The drum sticks are the extensions of drummer’s hands like a brush is an extension of the painter’s hand.”

‘Scientific Center,’ Project by Kois Associated Architects

Kois Associated architects goal was to create an artificial elevated dreamy landscape which combined functionality with aesthetic poetics, a centre which will be the landmark and the backdrop to the city. The emirate of Umm Al Quwain is located just 40 kilometres from Dubai, and is a place of rich history full of ancient villages and archaeological sites, which contrasts Dubai’s architecture.

The project site, located at the fringe of the proposed master plan. The program of the project called for a hybrid of a scientific centre and a conference centre. The scientific centre would promote the sciences and inform about the latest advancements in technology. The conference centre would accommodate conferences and conventions from all over the emirates and the rest of the world. The centre includes conference rooms, library, planetarium, learning centre, lecture theaters, science exhibition spaces, restaurant-bar and shops. The concept was the fusion of three iconic phenomena associated with the dessert, the oasis the whirlwind and the mirage. Read More…

Buzzihood by Alain Gilles for Buzzispace

This project designed by Alain Gilles for Buzzispace, is all about personal privacy and well-being. It is about being able to quickly protect yourself from the surrounding world, from a wild bunch of kids playing in your loft, to a host of colleges sharing the same open space office, to make some private calls.

The idea is to feel protect, but not isolated. You regain that too-often-lost privacy associated with the use of mobile phones but you never the less remain in touch with those surrounding you. You do not have to share your private conversations with everyone else and then again in some case you also do not “bother” everyone while on the phone. The concept is of course also reminiscent of those now fast-despairing open phone booth that use to be a common site in our cities, airports and hotel lobbies.

It has been designed in order to be very graphic and architectural. A colorful and lively piece that can bring warmth and personality to an office or trendy loft.
It is made out of recycled fabric, and is available in several colors, including: pink, lime, orange, grey, black and white and in some cases, it can also be customized. There is also the possibility to add-on a special little tablet so one can easily take notes or write down a number while making a phone call.

Armadillo & Lodge Chair by Baltasar Portillo

Art, sculpture, furniture, all three terms are important in the description of the Armadillo and Lodge chairs, part of a series of unique pieces by Salvadorian artist Baltasar Portillo. The architectural form, brings to mind a spanning bridge which enhances the view without blocking it. The chair becomes a part of its environment by allowing the viewer to see through the chair, thus framing the scene in a new way. It is imposing, yet airy and light. The elegant shapes are inspired by organic forms. Read More…
