The Hotel Marqués de Riscal is the newest design created by Frank O. Gehry, the renowned architect who designed the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao. Located in Alava, Spain, this ribbon like construction is the roof of a luxury hotel which boasts 43 modern suites, all with wireless internet, LCD TV’s, marble bathrooms, a fine restaurant, a tourist centre. This isn’t architecture… (well, strictly speaking, because there is actually a buildling there, it is architecture, but we begin to argue semantics).

This building is sculpture first, building second. And, I’ll be if you go in it, there’s little to relate the inside to the structure outside.

Typical of FOG…lots of style. Very little actual substance.

  3. Jose Cisneros Says:

It’s a pile of scrap metal dumped on a building.
The rear view, which shows the structural members holding up
the scrap pile is the more interesting of the two views.

I like it, white it serves no purpose…. Sometimes I wonder when I see things like this… just because something is possible doesn’t make it a good idea. It certainly stands out as unique in memory but for what reasons?

what is the fucking point of wasting all that space?
it costs way too much, its not very practical unless its snowing, i mean i wouldnt be complaining if those big shiny roofs where solar panels, but its like the guy just put a shit load of wrapping paper all over his roof. its rediculous and stupid.
a waste of money and talent.
did he even figure out how to make that all stable or did he have his lackey’s do it?
    honestly id like to know.
did this fucker just say “hey lets put a bunch of shit ona roof and call it art, and you guys are gonna figure out how to do it.”
    te inside though
im not complinaing about the inside. its rather nice.

a page in which a bunch of people criticize architects and thier designs?

    unique.

brilliant! i wish there were more interesting buildings everywhere – wonder if Spain has the most of them. Unfortunately, the world is full of wankers like “Elek” who haven’t evolved in their thinking very much.

  9. brendan Says:

Cool, not entirely necessary, but I think people pay lots of money for rooms just for the pleasure of being able to walk outside and look at the building for extended periods of time. Well, that’s what I would do.

  10. estragon Says:

i cant believe anyone would criticise this building or question its validity. it is hilarious that some whinging git can spend their time wondering what would happen if the winds were too high! this is a beautiful work of architecture adding real vision and beauty to the world. have you ever questioned why you are so boring?

how does it ever relate to the environment? -which i believe as one of the main terms of architecture…

I am not sure i like it,it’s definitely different. I like the interior even though it’s completely out of touch with the exterior. love his guggenheim museum though. I am interested in beautiful, interesting and complex roof designs, so pls publish more of these, you can check the “RMT bristol rail branch”, it is another good one.
