Container Home Kit by LOT-EK

LOT-EK’s Continer Home Kit is based on the concept that, around the world, there could be colonies of standard container docks where an urban nomad population could arrive and plug in its module houses. LOT-EK’s Container Home Kit is a prefab house in which containers can be linked to make a 2 or 4-bedroom house, while its Container Mall is like a vertical flea market, in which each unit is occupied by a different retailer.

In terms of architectural features, Lot-ek has created a system that defies the rigidity of an industrial shipping container, providing surprising flexibility in both size and functions. The CHK system comes in two different series- Compact and Loft, and boasts 8×8 floor-to-ceiling windows, built-in closets, and wood floors. The best part is its expansion possibilities- regardless of the configuration, it’s easy to add on another container to accommodate a home office down the line.

Hi Lot-EK,
I have been trying to get our city hall in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and our Provincial government to do something for our homeless people and using containers was the best solution. In the end they told thank you very much but NO thank you, how disappointed that is. Do you have any suggestions that could be useful to twist a few arms in that Ultra conservative attitude, any hints or ideas are much appreciated. By the way I have been working on thses designs since 2005 and had something on paper in 1967 when I still lived in the Netherlands.
Thank you.

common, these are literal building blocks! get more creative.
also, a metal box for a pool with constant 81/2′ depth isn’t doable. good start though.

What I find frustrating is the limited number of container house projects that have actually been completed. I can find hundreds of designs and concepts, but very few that have made it to the construction phase.

I want one. With all the fires in California, these homes seem like a win win situation. How do they fit into building codes? Can someone do it yourself or does one have to hire a contractor?

How much more creative can you get?!!!
You are given a large strong box – saved it from the scape heap – you imagine how people can live and thrive inside this castoff box and then allow people to modify these ideas to custom fit their lives into these boxes without the major “bank slavery”.
It’s like a good pop tune – some will find format of popular music limiting and will produce dreck but some gifted individuals ( oh, lets say Elvis Costello) can work within the limits of the format; be challenged by the limitations and can create something that transcends the confines of the formated box.
Architecture is not about the box , it’s about ideas – shelter, culture, the human condition.
