Curtain Wall House by Shigeru Ban

The Curtain Wall House situated on an constricted intersection in Itabashi-Ku, Tokyo, consists of an elegantly spare two-floor block of open living spaces sandwiched between a large, overhanging triangular roof and deck that extend almost to the curb line. Around the perimeter of the triangle, the Shigeru Ban architects hung white curtains that can be opened or closed to regulate the degree of transparency between interior and exterior. In winter, a set of glazed doors (in combination with the curtain) can completely enclose the house for insulation and privacy. This thin membrane takes the place of shoji and sudare screens, and fusuma doors that appear in the traditional Japanese house. “Mies [van der Rohe] invented the glass curtain wall”, Shigeru Ban explained, “but I just used a curtain.”

Foster + Partners has revealed these images of what it claims to be the first zero carbon, zero-waste city in the world.
The Masdar development in Abu Dhabi is a 6 million square meter, car-free “walled-city” scheme. The development is being driven by Abu Dhabi’s Future Energy Company and will include a new HQ for the company as well as a new university.
The principle of the Masdar development is a dense walled city to be constructed in an energy efficient two-stage phasing that relies on the creation of a large photovoltaic power plant, which later becomes the site for the city’s second phase, allowing for urban growth yet avoiding low density sprawl. Strategically located for Abu Dhabi’s principal transport infrastructure, Masdar will be linked to surrounding communities, as well as the centre of Abu Dhabi and the international airport, by a network of existing road and new rail and public transport routes.
