The Orb by Philip Simpson

holidayparkhomemonocoqueconstruction.jpg

The Orb was born of Philip Simpson’s desire to have an inspiring and affordable outdoor space for his own family to enjoy. His starting point, as a designer, was to reject the box-like structure and unnatural colours and contours of the classic caravan. He wanted something that would enhance the user’s appreciation of the outdoors, from both inside and out. His initial sketches (on backs of envelopes and restaurant napkins), inspired more by gypsy caravans and yachts, won the support of his dream team of architects and designers, and the list of potential customers grew.

Casa Cachagua, the Forest House by F3 Architectos

casa-cachagua-forest-house-f3-architectos1.jpg

The Forest House created by F3 architectos is located in Cachagua, Chile. The use of wood for every surface, from the floor, walls and roof gives to the house cohesion with the forest. Allowing a tree to grown up and over the entry porch is a gesture that’s not only fraught with meaning but also with a beauty that will only increase over time. The natural and the man-made will co-exist side by side.

Paul McCartney’s New Video

The first video from Paul McCartney’s new album, “Memory Almost Full,” is an otherworldly fantasy, directed by the French filmmaker Michel Gondry, in which a postman brings this former Beatle a box with an old mandolin and, it turns out, an assembly of mischievous ghosts. As Mr. McCartney plays “Dance Tonight,” with its simple percussion and bright pop melody, the ghosts — including one played by Natalie Portman — leap around him, throw sparkling fireballs and scare off the postman. Mr. McCartney later follows them into the box, and as the clip ends, he is seen jamming with them, playing the drums.

Vertical House by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects

 vertical-house-lorcan-oherlihy-architects1.jpg

The Vertical House created by Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects, occupying a tight site in Venice, California, is a taut, kaleidoscopic tower that blurs boundaries between walls and floors. Clad in multicoloured fibre-cement boards, the flat facades are punctuated by 105 windows.
To maximize usable square footage, the site limitations have been pushed to the limits in both plan and height requirements, forcing the linearity of the design on paper to be translated in built form.

The Z-Box solves two problems facing the owners of a newly renovated, yet wide-open loft: where are we going to sleep? (ZZZ…) and where are we going to put all this stuff? The solution comes through an act of amalgamation wherein the functions typically performed by several disconnected pieces of furniture are combined, cooked down, and distilled into a carefully carved block of perforated steel, polycarbonate, and Douglas Fir.

Puzzle Alarm Clock

puzzle-alarm-clock.jpgCan you be focused when you wake up? This is the early-morning challenge you will face with the Puzzle Alarm Clock. It will awake you by shooting the four puzzle pieces into the air and you have to find and replace them to stop the alarm. Now that’s more of a challenge than simply hitting the Snooze button, isn’t it? Let’s hope you won’t throw it on the wall if you’re not into morning puzzles.
