Centro das Artes, Casa das Mudas in Calheta, Madeira by Paulo David

Paulo David’s Centro das Artes, Casa das Mudas is based in Portugal’s Madeira island. It remains the memory of the unexpected angles, the cut of the volumes against the loaming landscape, the frames resting on the interior light, the strength of the texture and richness of the stone, the confrontations between the opaque darkness and the transparent light of the glass.

The way the sun illuminates the surfaces — vertical and horizontal — illustrates that the architect’s considerations of material and texture are not arbitrary; they are grounded in the building’s location.
