Douglas House by Richard Meier

The Douglas House design by one of our favorite architects, Richard Meier is based on the shores of Lake Michigan. The house is one of several spectacular residences Richard Meier completed early in his career and that helped to solidify his reputation. The whiteness and pure geometry of the house stand in sharp contrast to the pine trees that surround it. The openness of the plan and the glass elevations ensure dramatic lake and shoreline views throughout.

You know what Meier is renowned for? Buildings with no soul that dupe populist culture. Try again for a wonderful architect, and please don’t say Norman Foster.

What I find interesting is architects who fail to realize that it’s that “populist culture” that pays the bills. Just like there is music for every taste.. there should be architecture for every taste and usage. The trick is make that architecture financially accessible and to educate people so that they don’t settle for what developers usually slap up. Then again, lord knows how many dwellings I’ve seen that don’t fit the site and look horrible due to either a lack of true architectural skill or a client who isn’t well informed. A local “Architect” here, Will Richards, is an example of that. To call him an architect is to call a Lada an automobile. His stuff is mostly awful.

Richard’s architecture is a complete contradiction to the second passage here. His work is time less, It was modern back in the 70′s and nearly 40 years later it is still modern. The snow white finish and clean lines allow it to be visibly appealing in both the urban and rural setting. One of the best aspects of Meier’s signature style is it’s universatility. In a way, the house depicts subtractive art by creating a void within the mass of green trees to create a working piece of art. Richard has not failed to realize the “populist culture”. If he had then he would not be a heroic architect producing heroic architecture. To attack Meier for his style is crued and ignorant. I myself don’t care to much for Frank Loyd Wright’s stuff, but I don’t think he lacks skill. He is a very good architect as a matter of fact and is a great one to study from, I just have a different vision than he did.

This is one of the great architects of all time. This house is timesless and to think it was made in the 70′s. The complexity he brings to all his buildings is amazing. Most will not relize untill they have really studied his work how much tallent this guy has. The small details of this house is what make it great.

Richard is a great arch despite what you skinny/fat/gay/retarded humans think…
He was recognized with the highest honors available in architecture, in 1997 he received the AIA Gold Medal from the American Institute of Architects as well as the Praemium Imperiale from the Japanese Government, in recognition of a lifetime achievement in the arts. In 1995, he was elected Fellow to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
He received the Deutscher Architekture Preis in 1993 and in 1992 the French Government awarded him with the honor of Officier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, and in 1989, the Royal Institute of British Architects, of which he is a Fellow, awarded him the Royal Gold Medal.
In 1984, Mr. Meier was awarded the Pritzker Prize for Architecture, considered the field’s highest honor. He was the youngest recipient of this award in the history of the prize

Hey!
I like Richard Meier and i’m using his worm (the douglas house) for schoolwork. I have to make my own dreamhouse but I don’t know how I have to combinate his modern style with warm and rather old furniture… Can you please help me?

helena, go do your own homework.
Not that it seems you spent any time thinking about this but if it truly is your own dreamhouse then nobody but you can help you with it. Because otherwise it’s someone else’s dream, not your own. Understand?
I think architecture is a career for which you are ill suited.
