Boston Arcology “BoA,” Project by E. Kevin Schopfer
Designed by E. Kevin Schopfer, AIA, RIBA , the Boston Arcology “BoA”is designed to provide safe and dry living space to over 15,000 people after rising oceans swallow the cities in which we live today. The floating city will provide housing distributed in hotels, offices, retail, museums, condominiums and a city hall. And while the design seems pretty incredible and maybe even impossible, it’s a spectacular mix of architecture and ecology.
To be located on a buoyant platform of concrete cells right in the Boston Harbour next to down town, BoA would sit perpendicular to the waterfront, thus minimizing the view sheds of existing buildings onshore.

The massing of the structure was designed using the principles of the golden triangle. Angles and towers criss-cross inside of a fixed border, giving structure to the projections inside. Elevators and moving walkways aid the transportation of the residents, employees and visitors in order to create an all pedestrian environment.
Sky gardens will be located every 30 floors and act as public squares for gathering spaces. BoA will also include a bevy of sustainable elements in order to achieve a LEED building certification.

Energy will be generated via wind turbines, solar panels and harbour based water turbines. Natural daylight will flood the building with the help of a passive glazing system. BoA will also include a fresh water recovery system, greywater recycling, and sky garden heating and cooling vents.

I feel attracted to the size and form of the building. And to the idea that it captures the colors of the day and gives it back in his own way. It’s like some kind of gentle honesty. But I don’t like the building in this context. I think that in this context, the building looks like a mini-bridge that tries to make a connection with the other site but just can’t make it and thus fails.
It also looks like the building is being pushed away from the other side into the open and because it also can’t make contact to the other side, the building just seems to be in the way where (and how) it’s standing now.

I’m a help desk agent and I was at work the other day when a cusomer called to complain about the sound card in his computer. He said, “the right channel is comming out of the left speaker and vice versa” so I told him to switch the speakers and he felt so stupid he hung up on me! Humor is good so laugh. Anyone else have a good one?
