Plastiki, Recycled Catamaran

A 60-foot catamaran made mostly from recycled plastic, plans to sail from San Francisco to Sydney, Australia. Almost everything is repurposed plastic: the deck, the sails, the cabin. Even the two hulls are ringed by approximately 13,000 pressurized 2L bottles. After three years of research and construction the voyage will determine its seaworthiness.

On board, the Plastiki functions as a self-sufficient “closed loop system” generating its own energy and water managing its waste. David de Rothschild its creator who leads the adventure aims at raising global waste awareness.
