ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjarvi, Sweden

Benny Ekman

Jukkasjärvi’s ICEHOTEL exists only 4 short months over the year. Built of ice and snow, it is located in a land of Northern Lights and the Midnight Sun, north of the Arctic Circle.

The ICEHOTEL never stands still, its frozen solid ice melting to a free flowing river, and freezing back during a year. It begins in March, when crystal clear ice is harvested from the Torne River.

Artists from all over the world carve 2 ton ice blocks into sculptures and a hotel. Imagination and hard work give birth to temporary art in 32 different suites, several specific rooms and a famous ice bar, with its glasses made of ice.

Over 30,000 tons of snow coming from the nearby Torne River form the etherized exterior structure, central supports, all rooms and the surreal ice bar. At the end of the spring, snow is recycled and stored for next year. The ICEHOTEL aims to achieve a carbon negative imprint by 2015.
