Lockyer Residence by Shaun Lockyer & Arkhefield

Located in a treed and hilly suburb of Brisbane, the “Lockyer Residence” is an extension onto a post war house. Leaving most of the original construction intact, the add-on allows to reprogram the overall outcome.

The architecture of the space is about the family, the connection with the landscape and the the sky. The space can now address cold winters and increased summer breezes, which wasn’t considered in the original cottage.

Conceptual Framework: The experiment was a challenge to achieve a qualitative outcome at a very low cost with affordable simple processes, to accommodate a young family. The other core function was to improve the connection with nature and a climatically comfortable place to live.

Public and Cultural Benefits: The keeping of the old cottage preserves the cultural identity, while the contemporary extension is partly concealed by a large tree. High animation at nigh forms a lantern of joy in the street.

Relationship of Built Form to Context: Bold juxtaposition, the form of the extension contrasts while the material and colors reference the vernacular. Glass on the street reinforces the idea of old and new with a minimal palette of materials.

Program Resolution: The need to be highly economical, sustainable and to be able to live in the house while building determined the planning.
Sustainability & Environmental Consideration: Living on the site for 6 years gave a good understanding of the sun, the breezes and views. Recycled and FSC timber, energy lighting, high spec insulation and fans were used so there is no air-conditioning.
