The project of the “floating eco house”‐ fully ecologic, floating residential facility, was created in response to contemporary problems of the environmental pollution to meet new trends in real estate market related to lack of space in city centres. This is a project of the fully economically and environmentally sustainable building.
The principal idea is to create an ecologic house with minimal environmental impact, which responds to the needs of its residents and their lifestyle. To achieve that, a project uses a low‐energy solutions, innovative technologies and environmentally friendly materials.
“Floating eco house” is a mobile, modular structure. The basic construction module has dimensions similar to the transport container, which is 2500 x 5000 x 2800 mm. Proper selection of sizes allows a very simple, fast and cheap transport of the building by land and water, without the necessity of special adaptation of vehicles to transport large objects. This gives the possibility of flexible changes in the appearance and building size at any time during its lifecycle. Any change in the layout of rooms, partitions of windows, cladding panels, etc., can be completed very quickly without engagement of qualified professionals.
Prospectively, the house can be rearranged to new needs of its residents: a very flexible and versatile space organisation makes rearrangement of interior easy and quick. When the family grows, the building can be extended. What is needed is to append an appropriate number of modules. Designed floating house is a lightweight construction based on a steel frame placed on floating foundations made from hydroconcrete. The building is made from prefabricated elements to provide a few waste during construction process and more efficient use of resources. The elements from the original construction of walls and ceilings can be re‐used in its expansion. Detailed design assumes avoiding of layers sticking to each other due to proper laying and the use of bolts and screws. The possibility of separation of the different materials allows a trouble‐free disposal, recycling and uprecycling.
Building materials used in the project have been carefully selected to meet several requirements. First of all, they are
to be non‐toxic, environmentally neutral, assessed from local sources. Therefore, selected materials are natural, little processed and easy reprocessible. Some of them may be obtained from demolitions. All are recyclable or contain recyclable substratum.
The floating house is designed to meet the assumptions of energy autonomous building. This is an object that can be used independently from urban technical infrastructure as a typical facility based on the “off the grid” technology. The project employs a system of direct income and passive use of solar energy. The roof top is covered with solar and photovoltaic panels which generate heat and electricity. Plan of the house is oriented according to the angle of incidence of sun rays. Reduction of the heat loss is possible thanks to the walls with a low heat transmission coefficient and the absence of thermal bridges. The underfloor heating and mechanical ventilation with a heat recovery unit is responsible for the circulation of warm air in the house. The building uses energy saving light bulbs, LEDs and fiber optics and is also equipped with energy‐efficient household appliances. Minimizing the amount of collected power results in significant reduction of greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere.
The important issue in functioning of the floating home is the rational water management. The building is equipped with a system of water recovery from rainwater and the biological filter system for receiving water directly from the surrounding water. It is possible because of wetlands filter system, based mainly on the activity of the soil bacteria. There is a waste water collection tank, at the lowest level of the house, from which the sewage are taken into a biological filter after a preliminary filtration. About 80% of the waste water is converted into gray water.
