AME-LOT Wooden Pallet Building by Malka Architecture

AME-LOT is a project created by Malka Architecture who wanted the whole process to be nature friendly.

He aimed at minimizing excess materials and utilizing them more efficiently to reduce carbon footprint. The project is destined for rue Amelot in Paris.

The skin consists of an existing module: the wooden pallet. Held using horizontal hinges, the pallets contract towards the top, allowing privacy or large openings. The modularity of the various palettes creates varied geometries, which are based on use and constantly regenerated. The reappropriation of materials recycles the existing without additional processing, which would cost energy in terms of production and create byproduct pollution. Read More…

Christine Hadiningrat in collaboration with Sauter Carbon Offset Design present the Bali Net Zero Hotel Resort & Spa; The first Zero Carbon 5 Star Hotel in the world that’s also a Solar Power Generating Plant for the local community. By generating and selling this surplus electricity by day, the Hotel is able to offset the electricity they will consume from the grid by night. In this way, there is no need for an expensive storage system where returning power to the grid is not an option.

Herzog & de Meuron’s Car park in Miami’s Lincoln Road

The skyline about 1111 Lincoln Road, designed by Herzog and de Meuron incorporates 300 parking spaces.

It’s not a building, it’s more like a performance piece,” says the property developer in his corner office, the palm-strewn townscape of Miami Beach visible behind his elbow as it heads towards the ocean. Given that he’s talking about a multistorey car park, this might seem pretentious, but bear with him. He’s trying to make a parking garage go where none has gone before.

Shift Housing, Sergnano Italy by AquiliAlberg

With a play of perspectives, the “Shift Housing” designed by AquiliAlberg Atchitects challenges the constraints given by a very small and narrow site and by the local area regulations.
Playing with two opposite rotations of 4°, the two floors are shifted. Rotating the ground floor front facade – elevated from the ground 1.2m – anticlockwise and rotating the first floor front facade clockwise, the results are two volumes with an x direction visible on the front side.

Created also for structural needs, the gap between the two volumes is a strong mark which emphasize the perspectives. The effect, with the open cantilevered loggias is a strong dialogue and a seductive exchange between fullness and emptiness, lightness and dynamism. The view towards the natural park, a protected area, has determined the orientation of the building. Designed also for structural reasons, the gap between the two volumes is a strong sign that emphasizes the perspectives. Lou Ruvo Center, Cleveland Clinic by Frank Gehry

The riotously sculptural $100-million Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, the story is about the depths — and ultimately the limits — of the human mind.
While the signature steel forms of the Lou Ruvo Center may at first suggest the building is just another Gehry project, think again. What distinguishes this Gehry design from the rest is that it is the only one for hire, not to mention that the building has received critical praise from the Los Angeles Times architecture critic, Christopher Hawthorne, as having the most impressive Gehry-designed interior space since the architect’s Disney Concert Hall in 2003.

The complex comprises two wings connected by an open courtyard: a dedicated research center, located at the northern end of the building, and a ‘for-hire’ event space, dubbed the Life Activity Center, located at the southern end. Architecturally, the two spaces are dramatically different and yet together they form a cohesive whole. The four-storey clinic, which houses medical offices, patient rooms and research space, is rational.

Park51 Community Center, New Rendering by Soma Architects

Park51 and SOMA Architects released their first renderings of what will be Park 51, the controversial Muslim community center and prayer space in lower Manhattan. The drawings reveal a dramatic 13-story building with a facade of interconnected webbing and a bright white, day-lit interior. Park51 will be a $100 million mixed-use cultural and community center and is slated for LEED certification. The elaborate, yet undeniably futuristic feel of this structure injects just the right amount of personality into its Manhattan neighborhood.

An ice-white latticework effect scatters across the facade, with allusions to both traditional Islamic architecture and iconic symbols from other faiths, such as the Jewish Star of David. This intricate detail can also be noted from the interior renderings, as light rushes to enter the building during the day and floods out as night falls.
