Westcliff Pavilion by GASS Architecture Studios

GASS Architecture Studios completed the Westcliff Pavilion based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The facade of the house is just incredible, it combines modernity with roughness of the stones.
GASS Architecture Studios say:

The cottage at 28A Pallinghurst is a steel-framed pavilion structure located on the Westcliff Ridge in Johannesburg, South Africa. This 2 bedroom dwelling, nestled away in its wooded surroundings, is positioned just before the inception of a major sheer face of the Westcliff Ridge. This affords the building a private, tranquil hiding place in the trees juxtaposed with a feeling of floating above the ridge combined with magnificent views of Johannesburg.

Steel framing was a natural choice of construction method, as it married the environmental and access requirements to the desired architectural aesthetic. Simply put, we wanted a structure that would touch the Ridge as lightly as possible combined with an elegant, timeless aesthetic that would allow us to use the steel elements not only as primary structural elements, but also as the primary architectural motif. From an environmental perspective, access to the site is quite complex, having to traverse down a very long, narrow driveway through several people’s private properties, and half way down to the ridge to the site itself over an existing garden. Because of this, we wanted to bring in as few construction vehicles as possible, especially large concrete trucks. Read More…

KRTMRG 0611 by Steinmetzdemeyer Architects

This single family house was built to replace an old barn in Dalheim, a village 20 km from Luxembourg.
Working in the volume of the original barn which butted up against another house, the design aims to remain modest and complementary to the ‘art-deco-rural’ style of the neighboring house. The basement of the barn with its vaulted cellar was maintained as a platform for the new house. This was also dictated by the presence of Roman relics in the local ground.

The house is developed on 3 levels. The ground floor is a very open space gathering the social living places, from the street to the garden: kitchen, dining and living room with a fireplace.

Kona Residence by Belzberg Architects

Kona residence is another fantastic realization from the really innovative architects Belzberg. The residence is located Kona, Hawaii.

Belzberg’s description:
Nestled between cooled lava flows, the Kona residence situates its axis not with the linearity of the property but rather with the axiality of predominant views available to the site. Within the dichotomy of natural elements and geometric hardscape the residence attempts to integrate both the surrounding views of volcanic mountain ranges to the east and ocean horizons westward.

The program is arranged as a series of pods distributed throughout the property, each having its own unique features and view opportunities. The pods are programmatically assigned as two sleeping pods with common areas, media, master suite and main living space.

Windows and doors are integrated in the wood-clad facade behind facade shutters with varied bent mirror panel effects. At night the shutters are closed making the building anonymous. During the day the building opens up, attracting the children who enjoy seeing themselves transformed in all directions.
