Robin Falck got the idea to built a cabin/small house that would be small enough to be built without the need of a permit. So Robin started daydreaming about different possibilities and desiged and planned the house. He contacted a couple of architects who helped him with some of the more technical stuff.
Then the construction began.

Robin had already chosen the place and had it in mind when designing the cabin. On june the 5th he started the construction and 2 weeks later the only thing missing where the window and door which arrived a couple weeks later.

It is 96 sq. ft. and has a 50 sq. ft. loft where I have my bed and store my clothes. I call my house “Nido” which loosely translated into Italian means “Birds nest.” The house sits on the lakeshore and views of the lake can be seen from both the bottom floor and the loft.

The bottom floor is pretty much a lounge/living room where I lay back and enjoy the starlight along with some smooth jazz. The house is designed to maximize the allowed 96 sq. ft., acoustics and to bring in as much as possible of the natural light and nature during the night as during the day.

VillaLola by Arkis Architects is built with a frame of sustainable goal settings. Villa Lola is clad on the exterior with Larch-wood. The larch is weathered to its nature gray-ish color, forming a natural weather protection. All loadbearing members are of wood except for one concrete wall, used for stabilizing the structure, and a concrete foundation. Flooring is of robust wooden boards and concrete terrazzo.

Inner walls are gypsum surfaced stud frame walls painted with environmentally friendly paint. All windows are of wood, clad with aluminum on the exterior. During the construction process the plot was carefully protected and the working space around the building was minimized. During construction, all waste was carefully sorted and appropriate materials sent to recycling. The building is specially designed as a low maintenance structure.

The client requested the possibility to divide the house into three spaces, or apartments that could be enlarged or reduced as needed. Villa Lola is 128m² of gross floor area. Another request from the client was to use low maintenance materials and to develop an inclusive approach with regards to the site and building. Based on these requests the design process started.

The design of villa Lóla was an especially enjoyable dialogue process between client and architect. Various ideas of materials, concepts and techniques where discussed in the process. Inspirations range from Swiss mountains cabins, a sea ranch in Sonoma County in California, and Japanese solutions in spatial efficiency. Furthermore, the framing of views was an important topic of discussion.

The natural surroundings of the site and the fjord of Eyjarfjördur were key factors to address.

FREAKS freearchitects have been commissioned for the interior design of the shop for a new natural comestics brand Heliocosm located in Herold street, Paris 1st ward.Clément Sauvet from Helicosm wanted to create a brand that banishes the chemical ingredients of conventional cosmetics and respects both the consumer and their environment. The architects have inserted a rectangular timber tunnel inside this Paris cosmetics shop. An opening cut away from the wooden box provides the location for a salvaged second-hand table, while integrated shelves display products.

xThe program of the shop consists mostly in a big workshop table onto which the customers are invited to make up their own cosmetics based on natural products lead by professional tutors.
As the total dedicated budget of 100K€ was pretty low compared to the total 100sqm area to be refurbished, the project focuses onto one single space characteristic: the impressive length of nearly 20 meters, pretty rare as a shop setting within the typical parisian context.

The major efforts were made on the renewal of the first and the last rooms, linked with a wood-covered tunnel-alike space hosting all the display shelves and cupboards. The chosen color is a light greenish blue, a so called “cool mint” color, applied all over floors, walls and ceilings, wrapping the visitors within a both refreshing and disturbing feeling.

Whangapoua is a Prefab Hut built by Architects Crosson Clarke Carnachan on the shore of an idyllic white sanded beach in New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula rests an elegant hut. Closed up, the rough macrocarpa-cladding blends into the landscape and perches quietly on the dunes, as passersby wonder how it could possibly function for a family of five.

Designed to close up against the elements, the hut measures a mere 40 square metres and rests on two thick wooden ‘sleds’ that allow it to be shifted around the beach front section. This innovative portability is a response to the ever changing landscape that line the beachfront in this coastal erosion zone.

Within the hut, the ingenuity reveals itself further as no nook or cranny is overlooked. Every available space has been utilised, right down to the secret individual cubby holes hidden in the children’s bunk room.

For these clients it was all about the real essence of the hut; small, simple and functional. The hut comes to life when the enormous shutter on the northeast façade winches open to form an awning, revealing two-storey high steel-framed glass doors that form the main entrance. The hut then transforms into a sun drenched haven, opening up to the views of the surf and the distant Mercury Islands.

The mezzanine bedroom is accessed by climbing a wall-mounted ladder through a closeable hatch, it shares the same view as downstairs through the huge glass doors. Climb the ladder again and you arrive on a roof terrace which catches rainwater for the gravity tanks behind.

From the industrial style fittings to the quirky furnishings, this whole structure plays with the idea of the most egalitarian of Kiwi recreations and embraces and challenges the image of the traditional ‘Kiwi bach’. Small, simply and elegantly self-contained, this tiny elegant hut strips holiday living right back to basics.
Jared Levy and Gordon Stott sent a the pictures of thhier latest project announced today; the launch of Connect:Homes. In a first for the prefab industry, the company will manufacture modern, green, and affordable prefab homes from a single California-‐based factory and ship these homes to national and international markets using a patent-‐pending modular system.

Levy and Stott have an established prefab pedigree, having met while working at Marmol Radziner Prefab, where Levy directed architectural services. Levy and Stott were instrumental in the design and development of the modern prefab business and worked on the design and manufacture of close to 40,000 sf of some of the most innovative homes ever to come out of a factory, including the first prefab home to be published in Architectural Digest.

They became increasingly frustrated with the state of the current prefab marketplace and left to design a modular system that solved longstanding logistical limitations endemic to the modular industry: namely high delivery costs and home affordability. The new system allows Connect:Homes to be more inclusive with pricing. The company offers modern, sustainable prefab homes that can be delivered virtually anywhere, starting at $145/sf delivered and $165/sf installed.

“Our goal was to give consumers the high quality home that they desired at a price point that they could afford,” said Jared Levy, Co-‐Founder of Connect Homes. “The conventional building process is inefficient and the prefab industry does not currently deliver on its potential. We knew there must be a better, smarter way to build modern, sustainable homes that people could actually afford.”

While the conversation about prefab continues, the main shortcoming for the industry to date has been the inability to deliver prefabricated structures that are better and less expensive than traditional site built alternatives.
MEDIA CONTACT:
”We’re pushing the conversation to the next level,” explained Gordon Stott, Connect:Homes Co-‐Founder. “We set out to confront the status quo and address problems within the prefab industry. Rather than rehashing the same prefab rhetoric, we’re talking about a new practice, a new way of building homes.”
A NEW AFFORDABLE, GLOBAL SYSTEM
All Connect:Homes Series Homes are built to be easily transported, and modules are sized to work with the intermodal network. Connect:Homes is the first prefab company to be able to deliver homes not only by truck but also via rail or ship. These innovations are necessary because standard prefab modules cost about $20,000 to ship cross country and up to $400,000 to ship overseas. Connect:Homes’ patent-‐pending modular system cuts delivery costs by up to 90%, allowing the new company to affordably deliver homes virtually anywhere in the world. System design allows modules to be 90% completed before shipping, far surpassing current industry standards that are closer to 50%. This greatly reduces the amount of time spent on installation and finishes on-‐site, and means the hidden and surprise costs often associated with conventional construction projects are removed from the equation. The predictability of the Connect:Homes system means homebuyers can be quoted a simple and all-‐inclusive price from the outset. All Connect:Homes, which range in size from the Connect:2 to the Connect:8, start at $145/sf delivered, and range to $165/sf installed.

“We did not want to be limited by geographic location,” explained Levy. “There is a growing global demand for affordable green, energy-‐efficient homes, but until now there hasn’t been a way to sell homes to national and international markets. Connect:Homes will change that, delivering our homes from factory to doorstep anywhere in the country with the same ease as any other major commodity.”

Adaptable designs give homeowners an infinite number of possibilities to personalize their own space.
SUSTAINABLE
Connect:Homes centralizes the construction process with the goal of eliminating waste entirely. In contrast to the 8,000 pounds of waste generated at a traditional home building site, building in a factory cuts waste by over 75%. Once the homes are delivered to homebuyers, Connect:Homes products also offer superior energy efficiency, using less resources and providing significant yearly savings. For example, all homes come standard with LED lighting systems, and all Connect:Homes are designed to attain the points necessary for
LEED for Homes Silver certification before factoring in site variables, at which point Gold and Platinum will likely be possible.

This house built by Claesson Koivisto Rune is like a funnel of light, space and sea views. The location is the west coast of the Baltic island of Öland. The white concrete box is “corsetted” in the middle, creating slightly sheared wall and roof angles. This gives the house both its direction and character, while also marking the difference between the rear private two-storey bedroom part and the communal double ceiling-height front part.

Precast concrete is perhaps not the most common choice for a private house at this scale, but was ideal for achieving the ultimate precision in manufacturing tolerance and colour/finish.

The concrete is not painted or surface-pigmented but solid white, which gives it a wonderful glow. The joints between the concrete elements are carefully designed and positioned so that – instead of interfering with – they become part of the building’s geometry and expression. The sealant in between is gray to enhance the graphic effect rather than matching the concrete surface.

Studio Makkink & Bey were inspired by basic walking movements for the design of a new concept store for Camper in Lyon. Movements forward, upward and downward are shaped in staircase pedestals, stools or stepladders and outlined in bright red lines on the stairs, walls and floors. The stairs represent the conjunction of separate places. While performing as a place to meet, sit on or pass through, they expand places and establish rhythm, depth and infinity of spaces. This is the studios first cooperation with Camper as part of the Together Project.
Aan Zee which mean ‘ at the Sea’ in Deutch is a new restaurant along the beach path in Oostvoorne, The Netherlands. This amzing restaurant built by Emma Architects has wooden wall that rises up from the sand dunes and curls up to a watchtower. The wood is layered and in small parts mounted on the facade. It is exposed to the elements and will weather beautifully to blend into the surroundings. A glass façade ensures light and views. A third wall is concealed in the dunes and is formed by a series of buried shipping containers.

The building has a special water and energy management. Electricity is generated by windmills and solar panels. Heating and cooling is extracted from geothermal energy, and a natural convection system is used for the ventilation. The wastewater is treated in a helofytenveld. The regional, seasonal food is prepared on a wood burning stove and grill. Finally, the building is constructed so that it is possible to dismantle it again. Thus, the materials can be reused and the location again be returned to nature.
Seoul-based architectural practice, Planning Korea, completed their design for the Cocoon House, an amazing project of inhabitation for the volcanic island of Jeju. Inspired by the cocoon organisms, the team chose to organize the house around a spheric volume with round windows.

The self-sustaining resort that caters for both residential and business aspects. There are three different floor heights on the ground floor. The cocoon zone at the center with the tallest floor height has a courtyard that divides round shape kitchen and living room for gallery. The conference zone on the right complements living room function and a room on the left was created using landing space.

Their cocoon design creates a space like an art piece by translating the round shape of cocoon as an eco-structure design. This seaside condominium provides a self-sustaining creative business resort located in UNESCO Heritage Jeju Island. The volcanic island Jeju where this house is located has a unique forest called ‘Gotjawal’ with mild temperature and high humidity throughout the year that enables coexistence of diverse living things. An open air pocket pool enables swimming with the feeling of enjoying the nature of Jeju island.

The house is a high-end condominium located in ‘Gotjawal Village’, the first phase of the ‘Jeju Airest City’. ‘Jeju Airest City’ is the biggest integrated resort development in the history of Jeju island comprising various resort facilities including shopping mall, casino, hotel, medical center, and new concept of condominiums under the concept of a ‘Creative Business Leisure City’.

Graffiti Cafe designed by Studio MODE is located in Bulgaria. The main peculiarity is the work done on the ceiling and columns that adorn the restaurant. Columns became over exaggerated as Mode dressed them with and array of thin unfinished wood panels which reach up to the ceiling to create a connecting pattern. Filaments of wood add relief and a great touch at this decor.

We built up the interior as natural continuation of the architecture. By functional design we separated the area into two zones: the front zone was incorporated into the exterior creating public space and feeling of console silhouette of the building; the rear zone was separated through floor and roof design that allowed reducing depth of space while keeping the panorama.

The real challenge was to solve all functional problems related to ventilation, sound and mostly acoustics in a way subordinated to the chosen aesthetics as an interpretation of Escher work and the structure combinatory from one side and the striving to achieve this aesthetics through sparing use of materials and means of expression on the other side.

We created identical and unique concept that generalizes and masters the space while satisfying all technological and functional requirements. The result is trendy interior with sufficient dose of artistry as intentionally wanted reference to the Gallery of Modern Art situated on the next level of the building.

Guilhem Eustache – a Belgian studio built the ‘Forbes Residence’in Marrakech, Marocco. The architect aim was to create a dynamic equilibrium despite the difference of scale. Eustache played with light and shadow to enhance and strengthen the volumes and used local materials and techniques like clay for the exterior walls, tadelack for the baths and stones from the Ourika valley for the floors.

The architect has preserved the wildness of the land although they have planted more than 500 trees. The walls have been doubled to help deal with the climate creating high-rise rooms and sun protection.

Three white steel frames seek the longitudinal axis of the house from the center of the field. On the right side of the Guard house, two mixed cubes are close to a totem fireplace and face a double garage. These simple elements articulate the vacuum around the development and focus the eye towards the house itself.
Apart from being the perfect place for a ‘Modern Stone-age Family’, there’s several other good things going for the house. For instance, the property has a 360 degree ocean and mountain view. From the 23-acre estate’s glass windows, one can comfortably view the Pacific Ocean, Boney Mountains, Channel Islands, Serrano Valley and also Los Angeles.

Kona residence is another fantastic realization from the really innovative architects Belzberg. The residence is located Kona, Hawaii.

Belzberg’s description:
Nestled between cooled lava flows, the Kona residence situates its axis not with the linearity of the property but rather with the axiality of predominant views available to the site. Within the dichotomy of natural elements and geometric hardscape the residence attempts to integrate both the surrounding views of volcanic mountain ranges to the east and ocean horizons westward.

The program is arranged as a series of pods distributed throughout the property, each having its own unique features and view opportunities. The pods are programmatically assigned as two sleeping pods with common areas, media, master suite and main living space.

A central axis becomes the organizational and focal feature for the entire house, connecting each of the pods through an exterior gallery corridor. To help maintain the environmental sensitivity of the house, 2 separate arrays of roof mounted photovoltaic panels offset the residence energy usage while the choice of darker lava stone help heat the pool water via solar radiation. Rain water collection and redirection to 3 drywells that replenish the aquifer are implemented throughout the property.

Reclaimed teak timber from older barns and train tracks are recycled for the exterior of the home. Together with stacked and cut lava rock, the two materials form a historically driven medium embedded in Hawaiian tradition. 3-D modeling and digital fabrication through CNC machinery was incorporated to further enhance traditional elements in a contemporary arrangement. Local basket weaving culture was the inspiration for the entry pavilion which reenacts the traditional gift upon arrival ceremony. CNC milled ceilings and screens throughout the house continue the abstract approach to traditional Hawaiian wood carving.

The starting plan was to create a holiday home for a young couple and their two children. The main challenge for KO+KO architects was to make transformation to the house using the most advanced technology construction, without losing the warmth and inside comfort, that’s why they decided to create a wooden frame. Thus, there was a radical solution to create a concrete sarcophagus, on the facade resembling a Latin letter “S” hence the name of the house.

The house is located on a long, narrow area, 35 meters wide and 65 meters in length, on a hill, facing east, revealing a magnificent panorama of the river Dnieper.

{LIVE BETWEEN} is a newly launched hotel experience for guests who enjoy the extreme. The concept seeks out urban cities to set up short term residency between existing buildings. As {LIVE BETWEEN} moves from city to city, it is designed and installed specific to its temporary inhabitance. Taking on various forms from a spider’s web to a constellation, the hotel formation is ever changing and always evolving.
{LIVE BETWEEN} hotel destinations are targeted towards urban cities of unique character. From Tokyo to New York, Dubai to London, the versatile hotel seeks to bring an additional economic bonus to cities known for hospitality and grandeur. This chameleon adaptability allows {LIVE BETWEEN} to move and expand as quickly as human life itself.
