This house built by Claesson Koivisto Rune is like a funnel of light, space and sea views. The location is the west coast of the Baltic island of Öland. The white concrete box is “corsetted” in the middle, creating slightly sheared wall and roof angles. This gives the house both its direction and character, while also marking the difference between the rear private two-storey bedroom part and the communal double ceiling-height front part.

Precast concrete is perhaps not the most common choice for a private house at this scale, but was ideal for achieving the ultimate precision in manufacturing tolerance and colour/finish.

The concrete is not painted or surface-pigmented but solid white, which gives it a wonderful glow. The joints between the concrete elements are carefully designed and positioned so that – instead of interfering with – they become part of the building’s geometry and expression. The sealant in between is gray to enhance the graphic effect rather than matching the concrete surface.

Studio Makkink & Bey were inspired by basic walking movements for the design of a new concept store for Camper in Lyon. Movements forward, upward and downward are shaped in staircase pedestals, stools or stepladders and outlined in bright red lines on the stairs, walls and floors. The stairs represent the conjunction of separate places. While performing as a place to meet, sit on or pass through, they expand places and establish rhythm, depth and infinity of spaces. This is the studios first cooperation with Camper as part of the Together Project.
The design for a new store concept for a Camper shoe shop in Lyon, is grounded on basic walking movements. Movements forward, upward and downward are shaped in staircase pedestals, stools or stepladders and outlined in bright red lines on the stairs, wall and floor. Stairs represent the conjunction of separate places. While performing as a place to meet, sit on or pass through, they expand places and establish rhythm, depth and infinity of spaces.
Graffiti Cafe designed by Studio MODE is located in Bulgaria. The main peculiarity is the work done on the ceiling and columns that adorn the restaurant. Columns became over exaggerated as Mode dressed them with and array of thin unfinished wood panels which reach up to the ceiling to create a connecting pattern. Filaments of wood add relief and a great touch at this decor.

We built up the interior as natural continuation of the architecture. By functional design we separated the area into two zones: the front zone was incorporated into the exterior creating public space and feeling of console silhouette of the building; the rear zone was separated through floor and roof design that allowed reducing depth of space while keeping the panorama.

The real challenge was to solve all functional problems related to ventilation, sound and mostly acoustics in a way subordinated to the chosen aesthetics as an interpretation of Escher work and the structure combinatory from one side and the striving to achieve this aesthetics through sparing use of materials and means of expression on the other side.

We created identical and unique concept that generalizes and masters the space while satisfying all technological and functional requirements. The result is trendy interior with sufficient dose of artistry as intentionally wanted reference to the Gallery of Modern Art situated on the next level of the building.

“The small house which the married couple and their child live stands at the densely populated area in Tokyo. Though the neighboring houses is very close, I aimed to design the house which exceed the physical narrowness living at the city.

I laid out the 4m×4m building that as small as I can at the center of site area 34m2 and made some space for flowing of light and wind around it. And by making the space, it’s possible to avoid setback regulation and it has the 9m high volume like a tower.

The inside is simple structure what is separated by the 4 floor boards and is jointed by spiral stairway. Especially, by making some extremely thin floor boards (thickness 70mm) , the up and down floor boards got close and connected the whole space of the house without a break.

The space of around the house is useful to let light and wind in.
The wall of the rooms borders the outside, so I put windows in the best position that harmonizing with its surroundings. And the window is so big against the small room, every time the window opens or closes, the inside view dramatically changes. Especially, at the second and third floor there is a large hinged door each room, if it is opened, the inside of the room is enveloped in light and wind as if you are outside.

By making the thin floor boards for connecting with their life and making the large windows that are opened toward the city, I aimed to exceed the segmentation, for example the up stair and the down stair, the inside and the outside, a building and the town, etc… to broaden the whole image of a house.”

This beautiful apartment located in new york and built by interior designers ’Pulltab Design‘ is a haven of peace and zen in the middle of the crowd.

The owners of this duplex apartment, located on a beautiful tree lined street in the East Village, retained Pulltab Design to create a unique living environment for a young family of four. As a starting point, the clients requested that their 2,400 square foot apartment be selectively renovated and that the new design revolve around not only creative architectural additions but also the thoughtful selection of free standing furniture and lighting. In the schematic design phase, initial conversations revolved around modern masters such as Geoffrey Bawa, Carlo Scarpa and Richard Neutra.

Based on these conversations, it became apparent that the new design should strive to create a warm and open living environment with unique handcrafted detailing. Materials such as stained concrete, American black walnut, bronze and steel were selected along with modernist finishes, including hand applied active patinas, true pigment paints and high gloss lacquer surfaces.

The heart of the apartment centers around the living/dining areas. As part of the architectural construction, a new cantilevered dining ‘pod’, extending from the 5th floor slab, was added to increase the size of the kitchen. On the outside surface. of this pod, a custom planted garden wall was installed with the intent of creating a focal point, with a slightly mysterious quality, for the living room.

In combination with the vertically planted wall above, a shallow reflecting pool, custom fabricated from folded steel sheets, was placed in the living room. This reflecting pool functions both as a means to capture water droplets, from the vertical garden wall’s concealed irrigation system, and also allows for the addition of a calming indoor water garden, stocked complete with colorful goldfish.

On the east wall, a new double height panel system was installed, assembled from painted furniture grade plywood. The panels, both fixed and functioning, are separated by a pattern of reveals which add both texture, interest and most importantly a sense of scale, to what was originally an overwhelming surface. Several of the individual panels, denoted by custom routed hand pulls, open to reveal (from right to left) a chess table, a large 8′ long claro walnut dining table and a fold down illuminated bar with glass shelving.

To delineate the function of each panel, three colors were chosen: a bright orange, a glowing yellow (for the concealed bar) and a deep blue. These colors add an active layer to the space while tracing their connection back to Piet Mondrian’s inspirational composition paintings, from the 1920′s and 30′s.

Chevron House, West London designed by Andy Martin Architects is inspired by the architecture of the existing elegantly proportioned spaces, the design sets out to exaggerate, by scaling the space by removing walls, and attaching new space to create a large Edwardian warehouse on each of the three levels. The ground floor, the public level is essentially one space which is divided only by the use of colour and material. On the second and third levels, the private floors, bedrooms merge into bathrooms and visa versa.

The rear of the property has new extensions off both the living and kitchen reaching into the garden to absorb the light from the south. The client’s brief to use colour extensively was applied in such that the walls and ceilings are left light in colour (off white) and that only elements or interventions (joinery etc) would be strongly coloured giving the house a lighter atmosphere with greater sense of perspective.
Apartment H designed by Re-act Now Studio is located within a block of apartments in Constanta on the Black Sea coast. Their first intention was to create an open space wwith a distinct beach-side feel.. The interior has a predominantly white glass partition that separates the living room , the bathroom and bedroom. Colored film has been stuck onto the glass to add a funky touch of coulour in the apartment.

Re-act Now Studio says;
Into a white space with floating objects all around, a spectral THING took place inside.
Reflections, transparencies, colors are changing continuously as far you are moving.
The THING is controlling everything around.
A twister of feelings and sensations is taking us apart.
Perhaps the THING is trying to communicate.
That is why we have to take care what we are saying…
Who knows perhaps IT is HUMAN after all!…
The apartment is located in a block of flats in Constanta, directly on the Romanian seacoast of the Black Sea.
It was the priming intention of having a beautiful open space with a continuous “sea coast feeling”.
The white color is almost everywhere.
A glass partition cut out the main sensation of “innocence” of the existing space, through its folding trace and through a special spectral film sticked directly on it.
The 3M Radiant Color Film product is usually supposed to be used on some small gadgets or promotional products. This 3M film gives through its optical properties a “real life” to the entire space.
A continuous change of colors and reflections is perceived by whoever is moving inside the apartment.
In the end having a “living” element is the main challenge on a white surrounding.

Dutch firm Most Architecture have created this temporary office from wooden pallets for an Amsterdam advertising company.

A temporary furnishment for the new office location combined with the explicit wish to furnish the space with an authentic, recycable material, gave creative director Marvin Pupping and MOST Architecture the idea to use Euro-pallets for this particular design. The pallet structure; an open, autonomous landscape that gradually changes its character, facilitates all parts of the office.

The pallet structure is designed in such a way that besides being merely a workplace, the entire element invites you to stand, sit or lay down on the pallets. This open office concept was created to suit the creative advertising agency, with an additional, informal atmosphere.

The existing building on the Brouwersgracht, downtown Amsterdam, is an archetypical Dutch canalhouse; a narrow, 27 meters deep space, with a back area that is divided by split level. Because of this, the concept for this dynamic company was organised along the longitudinal axis. And because of BrandBase’s specialty, it was mandatory to include new media. The design concept, an open autonomous landscape, consists of 3 layers. The first layer, the existing space was used as a starting position and painted completely white, to provide a homogeneous base for the pallet structure. The pallets itself create a structure that slowly changes its character accommodating all parts of the office. Finally, the third layer in the design contains additions to the pallet structure like light fixtures, staircase banisters and the furniture; which are all done in black. The structure is not dictating, rather facilitating.

The open character is enhanced by dispositioning the pallets both directions over a 20 cm grid. The pallet structure unites the whole space, covering the whole depth of the building in one single movement.

The design can loosely be divided into four zones:
The entrance area, the staircase area, the split level area and the studio area, in the back of the ground floor.
Entrance area: coming in, the pallet structure welcomes its visitors with open arms, created by two rows of desks, providing a total of eight working units on two different levels. Visitors walk onto the pallet structure like a catwalk, surrounded by BrandBase employees.
Staircase area: the working units in the entrance area make way for a staircase that is divided in two part; the formal part with its steps and banisters and a more informal part, where stacked pallets provide for a place to hang-out.

Split level area: reaching the upper floor, the staircase transforms into the management premises, with a combined presentation- and meeting room. Here, the four desks are designed more independently. Subsequently the pallet structure, separated by a transparant wall with translucent doors, develops into the presentation room with its seating element that accommodates guests during presentations. In front of this, a huge movable boardroom table, made of pallets.

Lecarolimited was commissioned to remodel the penthouse of a German apartment building, spread over two floors. The mirrors of different shapes and sizes create geometric patterns across the partitioning walls of the penthouse apartment, surrounding the kitchen, fireplace and seating areas.

We projected into the design both a tradition of Loos-ian sensuality, as well as Mirror’s history of associations with myth and magic; a notion of the unnatural or sinful, where mirror feeds identities, and represents likenesses with an ever-so-slightly distorted truth. Meanwhile, both the material and the spatial application facilitate the dynamic and whimsical aspect over a German city roof-scape.

We constructed the new interior surface as discrete objects on site. Constructed by our carpenter as wooden substrate, they are finished for the ‘mirror-belt’ using a custom painted bespoke glass. The unique character of this material ultimately defrayed the intensity of a standard mirror, each piece arriving in small and nonuniform panels.

i29 interior architects designed their new offices for about 80 people. With Tribal DDB their main objective was to create an environment where creative interaction is supported, and to achieve as much workplaces as possible in a new structure with flexible desks and a large open space. All of this while maintaining a work environment that stimulates long office hours and concentrated work. As Tribal DDB is part of an international network a clear identity was required, which also fits the parent company DDB. The design had to reflect an identity that is friendly and playful but also professional and serious. The contradictions within these questions, asked for choices that allow great flexibility in the design.

Situated in a building where some structural parts could not be changed it was a challenge to integrate these elements in the design and become an addition to the whole. i29 searched for solutions to various problems which could be addressed by one grand gesture. At first a material which could be an alternative to the ceiling system, but also to cover and integrate structural parts like a big round staircase. Besides that, acoustics became a very important item, as the open spaces for stimulating creative interaction and optimal usage of space was required.

This led us to the use of fabrics. It is playful, and can make a powerful image on a conceptual level, it is perfect for absorbing sound and therefore it creates privacy in an open space. And we could use it to cover scars of demolition in an effective way. There is probably no other material which can be used on floors, ceiling, walls and to create pieces of furniture and lampshades then felt.

It’s also durable, acoustic, fireproof and environment friendly. Which doesn’t mean it was easy to make all of these items in one material!
i29 always looks for choices that answer to multiple questions at the same time. They tell a conceptual story about the company, the space and the users of the space. They deal with specific practical and functional issues and they have to have some autonomous quality as well. These ‘levels’ are intertwined; one leads you to the other. If you see how smart it serves it purpose practically it leads you to the company. If you see the powerful image that is non-depended, it leads you to the functionality, and round it goes.

We believe that simplicity builds character. Compare it to a human being; strong individuals always have one or few characteristics that stand out. We all know how hard it is to stay focused on the one thing that is most important to you. The same way it is with a design. The result of being very selective is that you have to push the one choice to the limit. It also provides a field of tension, and gives energy in a space without falling into chaos. But more importantly it leaves you with a charismatic environment.

The exterior walls are smooth black plaster, designed to render the building as a singular sculptural object set within the lush natural setting. A series of abstract indoor-outdoor spaces with framed views to nature are rendered in white surfaces of various materials and finishes; lacquered cabinetry, matte white quartz, epoxy resin floors and decks.
Tex-Tonic House 1 is a penthouse recently completed by Paul McAneary Architects Ltd in Victoria, London, UK .The clients brief in this invited competition was to design two apartments on the top floor of the existing Cental London post office and Phillips de Pury art action house in Victoria, London.

The client expressed a wish for large volume ‘loft’ spaces and his desire for a contemporary design and functionality. Paul McAneary Architects’ response won the competition with a proposal for expressed natural tectonics through numerous new details, and even developing a new material type – of cast timber bronze.

Concept Design
Since, the two apartments are built on top of the existing Cental London post office, the postal delivery system has been the inspirational source of the concept design. Paul McAneary Architects responded to the brief by expressing and magnifying the ‘post box component-concept-element’ into large boxes of natural materials accommodating for the private program. We placed three bedroom boxes within the large double height loft space, to provide rooms for sleeping accommodation: additional to the master bedroom and two further bedrooms, they accommodate for the master bedroom walk- in wardrobe, en-suite bathroom and a shared bathroom.

In line with a more contemporary domesticity, the private program area is relatively modest in size. The client expressed the desire to have a large versatile living space perfect for relaxation and parties, as a result the living area is spacious and serves multipurpose events.

The overall architectural language is modest and dramatic at the same time: mixed timber tectonics have been applied with an emphasis on their texture and intrinsic beauty. The amount of ‘vertical natural light’ flooding through the large skylights, walk on glass and the horizontal curtain walling maximise the exquisite effect of the natural grain and pattern of the timber ceiling, oak beams and floor as well as the bronze ‘timber texture’.
Breaking the boundaries of simple architecture, Hoon Moon, Korean architect gave birth to Rock It Suda, a guesthouse with six bedrooms, each characterized by a specific theme: From Barbie to Ferrari, from Spain to the caves to finish with traditional Korean style. The six different ways to capture the landscape inspired Moon, who decided to give birth to the Same Spatial Concentration of Expansion and Compression reasoning on issues completely dissociated from the context such as Spain, Barbie, Stealth, Ferrari, Caves and Traditional Korean Style.

The hotel is located on the outskirts of Jeongseon in South Korea, on the banks of a river and has magnificent views over the mountains surrounding it.
The surprisingly complex ‘The Mountain’, 33 000m2, is green in the first degree. The apartments are from 80m2 up to 150m2, each has a garden and terrace. The Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has used the volume occupied by the parking lot to elevate the apartments. The program, however, is 2/3 parking and 1/3 living.

The Mountain Dwellings are the 2nd generation of the VM Houses – same client, same size and same street. What if the parking area became the base upon which to place terraced housing – like a concrete hillside covered by a thin layer of housing, cascading from the 11th floor to the street edge? Rather than doing two separate buildings next to each other – a parking and a housing block – we decided to merge the two functions into a symbiotic relationship.

The parking area needs to be connected to the street, and the homes require sunlight, fresh air and views, thus all apartments have roof gardens facing the sun, amazing views and parking on the 10th floor. The Mountain Dwellings appear as a suburban neighborhood of garden homes flowing over a 10-storey building – suburban living with urban density.

The roof gardens consist of a terrace and a garden with plants changing character according to the changing seasons. The building has a huge watering system which maintains the roof gardens. The only thing that separates the apartment and the garden is a glass façade with sliding doors to provide light and fresh air.

The residents of the 80 apartments will be the first in Orestaden to have the possibility of parking directly outside their homes. The gigantic parking area contains 480 parking spots and a sloping elevator that moves along the mountain’s inner walls. In some places the ceiling height is up to 16 meters which gives the impression of a cathedral-like space.

The north and west facades are covered by perforated aluminum plates, which let in air and light to the parking area. The holes in the facade form a huge reproduction of Mount Everest. At day the holes in the aluminum plates will appear black on the bright aluminum, and the gigantic picture will resemble that of a rough rasterized photo. At night time the facade will be lit from the inside and appear as a photo negative in different colors as each floor in the parking area has different colors.

The Mountain Dwellings is located in Orestad city and offer the best of two worlds: closeness to the hectic city life in the centre of Copenhagen, and the tranquility characteristic of suburban life.
