National Geographic has selected the winning images for their annual contest. This year’s entrants did not disappoint—more than 20,000 photographs were submitted to the contest from over 130 countries, with professional and amateur photographers across the globe participating. Photographs were submitted in three categories: people, places, and nature.

Judged on creativity and photographic quality, a first place winner was selected in each category by a panel of experts. From the three category winners, the grand-prize winner was selected. This year’s contest judges were National Geographic magazine photographers Tim Laman, Amy Toensing, and Peter Essick.

Ormond Gigli says;
“I was inspired to somehow immortalize those buildings. I had the vision of 43 women in formal dress adorning the windows of the skeletal facade,” Gigli writes. “The day before the buildings were razed, the 43 women … climbed the old stairs and took their places in the windows. I was set up on my fire escape across the street, directing the scene, with bullhorn in hand. Of course I was concerned for the models’ safety, as some were daring enough to pose out on the crumbling sills.”

Alain Delorme, photographer from Paris, captures fascinating photos of bicycle carriers in Shanghai, China. Under the blue sky of a highly colored Shanghai, men carry throughout the city unbelievable piles. These precarious columns made of cardboard or chairs appear as new totems of a society in complete transformation, both a factory for the world and a new El Dorado of the market economy.

In terms of form, the author diverges from a documentary style and its affected neutrality, still adopting some frontality. The image is organized in horizontal strata, like in an archeological section. From the sidewalk to the building, the grounds are positioned at intervals and allow different urban temporalities to coexist: the everyday life, the ephemeral, the unceasing move of the passers-by, and the great transformations, building sites and new towers. Beyond the balance of these compositions, the author breaks the rules of the documentary genre, playing with the edit and the color to present us a type of “augmented reality”, bringing into light the paradoxes of the most dynamic city of China.

Manipulator photographer Jill Greenberg presents her new project called ‘The Glass Ceiling’ on view at ClampArt . The photographs in this body of work picture female athletes and dancers underwater engaged in a variety of ambiguous and dynamic movements. Her series uses an underwater stage to capture a brood of water treading women in high heels. The women wear colorful bathing suits and high heels in complimentary hues, forcing one to question how and why these models are immersed.
Danish-born Mathias Bengtsson (b. 1971), who resides in London and Stockholm, created the Slice chair concept, which weds organic shapes with cutting-edge technology, in 1999. Slice began as a hand-modeled clay form that blurs a chair’s distinction between armrests, backrest, legs and frame. The organic shape was sliced into horizontal layers, digitally manipulated, formed again by a laser cutter, and then hand assembled and polished.

Bengtsson is known for cutting edge designs made from industrial and high tech materials. Slice is constructed as an assemblage of horizontal cross-sections that stack together into a distinct lateral profile. The designer chose aluminum for its reflective quality, and each of the 125 3mm thick laser cut layers is hand waxed and polished. The 3mm thickness provides both structural integrity and sufficient reflective edge surface to enhance the overall effect of a shimmering object. The limited edition Slice has also been produced in plywood, cardboard and foam. Milwaukee’s version was produced by the artist for the Museum in December 2010.

Washington, DC (April 28, 2011) – Industry Gallery today announced the acquisition by the Milwaukee Art Museum of a limited edition aluminum Slice chair by Danish-born designer Mathias Bengtsson. The Milwaukee Art Museum’s Friends of Art supported the purchase of the important design, the first work by Bengtsson to enter the Museum’s collection. The Milwaukee chair, number 14 from an edition of 20, is comprised of 125 stacked horizontal hand-polished aluminum slices.

Photographer Bence Máté snapped this amazing shot in Costa Rica. He writes:

I was photographing hummingbirds when I heard the sharp, alarming noise of the birds reacting to the presence of a predator. Sixty feet away from me this green-crowned brilliant was fearlessly attacking a small viper. The long shutter speed and shallow depth of field made it difficult to make an image with both animals sharp. This encounter was one of the most interesting ones I had ever seen, and I quickly set up two flashes to increase the light and shutter speed, using one flash fired from the background and another from the camera.

As part of the launch for 350 EARTH, the first global art show for the climate is signed by 350.org, founder Bill McKibben; multimedia hip-hop innovator DJ Spooky; renowned urban artist Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada; and director of the Santa Fe Art Institute, Diane Karp.
350 EARTH has issued a call to artists to submit climate change design sketches that will be used to create images viewable from space. The designs will be replicated by human beings, assembled like pixels on a computer screen, to create images so large that they will be seen and photographed by an orbiting satellite. The installations take place in over a dozen cities, including in Europe, South America, and seven locations in North America. Each project is large enough to be visible by space, and will be photographed via satellite. The public can sign up to participate in their city, or make their own art.

Most of the art is developed along the line of “gather-enough-people to-form-a-shape (or message)”: for example, a giant “350″ (representing the optimum levels of parts-per-million of CO2 in the atmosphere); a green footprint; or a polar bear created out of hundreds of red tents. 350.org says aerial images will be made available and displayed at the latest climate talks in Cancun starting on Nov. 29.
350.org November 20-28, 350 EARTH will become the first-ever art exhibit large enough to be seen from space.
A baby elephant was taking a drink when a crocodile, hidden under the surface of the water, clamped down on the juvenile’s trunk! Hearing the baby’s calls of distress, the herd of elephants immediately went to its rescue, scaring off the crocodile by trumpeting and stamping the ground. After the attack the herd stayed with the youngster.

When the baby had recovered the herd crossed the waterhole together in safety, only yards from where the crocodile had been hiding.
