Our friend Alain Gilles sent us his last creation called ‘Container,’ a modular sideboard system. As if a regular sideboard had beensplit into different elements, different ‘containers’.

It is really a research on deconstruction and reconstruction. As if a”standard” sideboard with its different storage functionalities had been split into various elements just to be reconstructed in a different, uneven manner. A research on the architecture of a piece in order to bring forward its construction logic. In a way, a “landing dock”, the base, and a few “containers” that can be set one on top of the other… hens its name.
The work on the structure is further highlighted by the association of different materials and finishes applied to each structural element. By playing with different types of finishes and settings several furniture pieces with their own personalities and functions can easily be created form the same original elements. Thus, it will either be seen as more a sideboard, dresser, media storage cabinet or television stand and find its way into different rooms of the house.

Colombia-based Malagana Design have designed the Equilibrium Bookcase. It is a unique furniture piece that catches attention by creating a sense of amusement and surprise. While its compartments seem to float in the air, Equilibrium can hold over 120 Lbs of weight and its different modules allow to keep books and magazines organized in a natural tilted position that eliminates the need for bookends. The acclaimed bookcase comes offered with a combination of natural walnut veneer and one of three color options: White, Celeste and Graphite. Specific custom colors can be matched upon request. It can be conveniently disassembled to fit inside the two larger modules and it ships in one easy to handle box. It can be assembled in just a few minutes without the need of tools or hardware.

Below Tokujin Yoshioka talks about his new collection entitled “The Invisibles” and his shop installation “Snowflake.”

You are presenting both product and installation in collaboration with Kartell this year. Please talk about the projects?

As a special collaboration between Claudio Luti and Tokujin Yoshioka, I am presenting “The Invisibles” collections and a shop installation entitled “Snowflake”. Recent years, I find myself often proposing designs, which incorporate the essence of natural phenomena and invisible elements.
The idea of the “Invisibles” initiates in the discussion I had with Mr. Claudio Luti almost two years ago. We both looked at the possibility to develop and express a new product in acrylic, which inherits the essence of optical glass bench “Water Block”.
It has been thought nearly impossible to create an industrial product in acrylic of this thickness. However, their innovative techniques and motivation and challenge to create a new product with a fresh dimension to idea have made it possible.

“The Invisibles” only leaves the sense as if seating in the air. The presence of the object is eradicated and it will create a scenery of a sitter floating in the air.

_______________________________________

What is your vision for transparent material?

I am drawn by things that do not have forms but leave emotional effect to people. At a glance, such material is invisible and its existence is erased. Through the interaction with light, however, the form suddenly emerges. I am fascinated not only with such phenomena, but also elements that can stir and stimulate our imagination. I also like the idea of light, which is the form of design itself.

_______________________________________

How does the “Snowflake” look?

For the installation, I will create a serene world with numerous transparent prism sticks in plastic. The accumulation of transparent sticks is tinged with white color just like real snow.I believe that the installation will offer visitors extraordinary experiences as if stepping into the snowflake.

This year, you are going to present new works from Kartell, Swarovski Crystal Palace, and Moroso.
Are there anything in common?
We are living in the age when design overflows. In such age, I pondered on expressing something that does not have form or design. In other words, it is something that transcends the general idea on form and design, and provokes our emotion.

It is not to deal with forms or to make minimal forms, but to design that gets us into the work, lifts up our spirits. I would like to design something that moves even myself.
Recent years, I am challenging to incorporate formless elements that appeal to our heart such as new idea, color, scent, and to design an emotion itself.

One of them is a phenomena called “light”, another one is something that you cannot see, and the other one is something that has unlimited forms by transforming its appearance.
This year at Salone del Mobile, I will present works that do not obtain forms, while each work has unique characteristics.

Slovenian designer Nika Zupanc presents an exhibition entitled “Gone with the Wind.” The Wind Pavilion stands as an icon evoking a sense for nature. With it, Nika Zupanc embraces the issue of responsibility by introducing the elegance and poetry of creative expression into predominately technical solutions.

Like so many magic pavilions in the past, this one is also outfitted in one of the latest achievements of the industry – the unique modular façade system Qbiss by trimo. Optically smooth surfaces, unique rounded corner elements, and “shadow joints” allow great freedom of expression and enable an optically enchanting combination of an inclined grid and an attractive landscape of 45 restless windmills.

Nika Zupanc continues to be sincere while uncovering the excuses for a socially acceptable status quo. By positioning archetypes that are considered feminine in the carefully selected centers of public attention, her chillingly beautiful forms become emerging reference points. Her battles are of a higher style, and so the presence of famous female literary heroines remains mandatory.
The entry point to the world of Nika Zupanc – a frame for her gallery and a prism for readings of her work – is also a metaphorical structure. It is a tiny house driven by toy-like windmills on the outside and with a big bang of connotations from the inside. Inside the Wind Pavilion, Nika Zupanc will put her newest family of objects on display. This time they came to address you as advocates of a sort because they present a case for new symbolic and emotional readings of design, and are told through elements of modesty and self-reliance.
