Tree Bookcase by Shawn Soh

This concept behind the design came from Shawn Soh’s early memories of sticking letters on tree branches. Unlike a regular bookshelf, Tree Bookshelf’s branch-shaped ‘shelves’ are very forgiving, meaning that books don’t need to be put back neatly. The organic nooks and crannies are perfect for tucking away toys and treasures too.

Rather than using wood for the design, which involves a ton of cutting and wasting of trees, Shawn decided to use steel, which is durable and easy to recycle. Each bookshelf takes one week to produce and every process including the welding and bending is done by hand. Read More…

With temperatures soaring as high as 50 degrees Celsius in the summer there was speculation the World Cup would take place in the winter and alter the fixture calenders of the major leagues across the globe. It was also suggested that some matches could be played in other areas of the Arabian Gulf due to the close proximity of the stadiums in Qatar. Scientists at Qatar University have found a solution to make artificial clouds for the 2022 World Cup.

The idea is to help block out the punishing sunshine that’s present there during the traditional World Cup months of June-July.

Bus Shelters Equipped with Video Games in San Francisco

If you live in San Francisco, you may get to play video games while you wait. Yahoo! has installed large touch screens in twenty bus shelters in that city:

As part of the promotion, transit passengers from 20 specified neighborhoods will get the chance to compete against each other in different video games — and the community that wins the two-month contest will host a block party featuring the rock band OK Go.

To compete, passengers need only to tap the screen and choose one of four games, which range from visual puzzles to sports trivia competitions. Once a rider has selected which neighborhood they want to represent, they can challenge any other waiting passenger to a live competition. Also, for anyone curious about duping the system, Yahoo has set up barriers to prevent any sort of automated competition.
