Bali Net Zero Hotel|Spa by Christine Hadiningrat & Sauter Carbon Offset Design

Christine Hadiningrat in collaboration with Sauter Carbon Offset Design present the Bali Net Zero Hotel Resort & Spa; The first Zero Carbon 5 Star Hotel in the world that’s also a Solar Power Generating Plant for the local community. Acting as a power station during the day, the surplus energy that is generated by the Hotel’s solar panels which collect more than double the required amount to run the hotel, is sold to neighbors. By generating and selling this surplus electricity by day, the Hotel is able to offset the electricity they will consume from the grid by night. In this way, there is no need for an expensive storage system where returning power to the grid is not an option.

“Éva,” Indoor Homefamer by François Hurtaud

Eva by French Designer François Hurtaud is a green alternative to the traditional compost heap.

One part of the waste is recycled to grow food and the other part produces methane turned into energy thanks to a co-generator. The energy obtained, produces light to stimulate the growth of the plants. The water is naturally filtered as it enters the container. Eva is a kind of self contained biosphere homefarm system that not only allows to cultivate vegetables but also produces fresh air and light. Eva is evidence of the restaurants’ green and healthy food process.

Boston Treepods Project by nflux Studio

In an effort to further decrease the carbon dioxide that trees naturally filter out, Mario Caceres and Cristian Canonico from nflux Studio in Paris designed the TREEPOD for the SHIFTboston Urban Intervention Contest.
Developed by Dr Klaus Lackner, Director of the Lenfest Center for Sustainable Energy at Columbia University, this revolutionary process is based on the discovery of the ‘humidity swing,’ a technology that enables the energy-efficient capture of CO2 from air, allowing to close the carbon cycle and creating a valuable product for beneficial use.

The TREEPODS themselves will be made entirely of recycled/recyclable plastic from drink bottles. Based not only on trees, but on the human lung, the design of the “branches” will feature multiple contact points that serve as tiny CO2 filters. The proposed design, giant white and translucent canopies of trees, can be installed among existing trees or on their own. Intere
stingly, the TREEPODS have been compared to “urban furniture”: sleek yet functional design pieces that would fit into any urban environment. At night, the TREEPODS light up in an array of eye-catching colors.

“Stickwork,” Installations by Patrick Dougherty

North Carolina-based artist Patrick Dougherty has gained an international reputation for his natural-wood structures and has created hundreds of monumental, site-specific sculptures around the world. His work is constructed from saplings gathered from local sources and shaped into massive, swirling forms as high as 40 feet.

Dougherty crafts large-scale sculptures from saplings: weaving, snagging, and flexing sticks into playful, nestlike architectural forms that evoke themes of shelter, habitat, and sustainability. Created of organic matter, his works have a natural life cycle, changing over time as the sticks settle and decay, eventually returning to the earth they grew from. Read More…

Lunar Cubit, Solar Power Generating Pyramids for Abu Dhabi

The energy-generating public art installation Lunar Cubit has won the First Prize at the 2010 Land Art Generator Design Competition. Lunar Cubit is a site specific proposal to be constructed in Abu Dhabi just outside Masdar City, the world’s first zero carbon metropolis once completed. Combining artistic vision with sustainable design and engineering, Lunar Cubit examines the nature of time through nightly contemplation of lunar phases and daily transformation of sunlight into electricity, powering up to 250 homes. Inspired by astronomy, quantum physics and the photoelectric effect, for which Einstein received the Nobel Prize in 1921, this work is open to the public, inviting a personal experience where one can literally reach out and touch a 1.74MW utility scale power plant, in the form of nine monolithic pyramids rising from the sands of Abu Dhabi.
