Two Nuns Bicycle by Ron Arad

Ron Arad designed the ‘Nuns Bicycle’ for a fundraising project called WOW bikes, organised by the Elton John AIDS Foundation and W Hotels. Ron Arad has used naturall sprung properties of tempered steel, bolted in tension that gives a natural yield or “softness”–to build a bike with wheels made of sprung steel.
To account for the added flexibility in the materials, Arad’s sprung wheels of steel are in fact a little bit larger than the average bike wheel but it’s this yield that gives the wheels a slight cushion and makes the wheels work in a practical way. Hearst said it’s a surprisingly comfortable ride, and, ironically, the faster you go, the smoother it is.

The Snow Cycle

This winter snow bicycle or snow cycle was Designed in Oberndorf, Austria, and is actually the snow bicycle that set the Guinness World Record for the longest vertical drop of 107,400′ in 11 hours and can reach top speeds of 66 mph. The latest version of this winter snow bicycle or “sit-ski,” features in-line, twin-skis and a powder-coated steel frame as well as a front elastomer/spring suspension that assists riders in initiating turns with the front ski, controlled with an adjustable t-bar steering column.

The Snow Cycle uses two main front and back skis for steering, with foot-mounted blades for stabilization. Luckily, a padded seat is also included, should you hit any debris and/or children. Steering is accomplished with an adjustable t-bar (and a good sense of balance). And in case you were worried, Hammacher Schlemmer assures that the ride “withstands the battering of snow, ice, and meltwater.” Phew! This sounds much more durable than my cardboard and glass sled from last year. If you can manage to stay on the thing, it looks like it would be a hell of a good time.
