The V-chip, short for “volumetric bar-chart chip,” can be carried around in a pocket.
It is composed of two thin pieces of glass, about 3 in. by 2 in. In between are wells for four things: (1) hydrogen peroxide, (2) up to 50 different antibodies to specific proteins, DNA or RNA fragments, or lipids of interest, and the enzyme catalase, (3) serum or other sample, and (4) a dye — any dye will do. Initially, the wells are kept separate from each other. A shift in the glass plates brings the wells into contact, creating a contiguous, zig-zagged space from one end of the V-chip to the other.

‘Mine Kafon,’ Minesweeper by Massoun Hassad
Graduated in industrial design, Massoun Hassad was born in Afghanistan where he spent most of his childhood playing in the desert. He built toys in paper or other material, who let themselves be carried away by the wind. Later on when he finished his studies of industrial design in Holland, Massoun’s got inspired by his childhood games to create a Minesweeper.

Massoun Hassad says: “We used to race against the other kids on the fields around our neighbourhood. There was always a strong wind waving towards the mountains. While we were racing against each other, our toys rolled too fast and too far. Mostly they landed in areas where we couldn’t go rescue them because of landmines. I still remember those toys I’d made that we lost and watching them just beyond where we could go..

Air, water, fire, the basic elements. I was trying to integrate these, in a physical way. And I also did a project about my childhood in Kabul, where I would make all kinds of things. Some of those things, as you can see in the video embedded in this story, were toys powered by the wind.’
