Portrait Building Project in Melbourne, Autralia by ARM Architecture

Grocon, construction group has unveiled the design for its latest project for Melbourne: a 32-storey residential tower designed by local architects Ashton Raggatt McDougall. The project is scheduled to be completed by 2014.

The façade is a symbol of Victoria’s indigenous heritage, a homage to the first Australians. The building’s façades have two distinct sides, and two distinct stories. The visage of William Barak (Beruk) the last traditional ngurungaeta (elder) of the Wurundjeri-willam Clan is transposed on to the building, representing the deep history and presence of Aboriginal nations in this land. Riverside Museum, Glasgow by Zaha Hadid Architects

Glasgow’s gleaming new Riverside Museum, designed by the Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid to house the city’s fascinating transport and travel collections, will open to the public on 21 June. The historical development of the Clyde and the city is a unique legacy; with the site situated where the Kelvin flows into the Clyde the building can flow from the city to the river. In doing so it can symbolize a dynamic relationship where the museum is the voice of both, linking the two sides and allowing the museum to be the transition from one to the other.

Carysfort Road Residence, Ireland by ODOS Architects

Originally No. 31 Carysfort Road was a mid-terrace, one bedroom dwelling, with a single storey rear return and small back garden. ODOS Architects’ brief was to refurbish the existing dwelling and improve the connection between living areas and the limited external space, while providing as much extra floor space as possible. The new structure was conceived as a simple form which connects at ground level with the existing house.

The tight site and strict planning constraints defined the form of the new extension from an early stage. In order to stop the new addition being visible above the roof line of the house, the new extension is partially sunken. The ground floor rear elevation is completely open to provide a full height glazed connection to the courtyard. Above this new living space is an office mezzanine with a glazed south-facing wall, providing clerestory lighting to the ground floor. Black terrazzo flooring has been used throughout, which contrasts with the white walls and ceilings.

Garoa Store by Una Arquitetos

Leonardo Finotti have just shot this little store created by Una Arquitetos and located in Oscar Freire Street, a commercial street in São Paulo, Brazil.
The main idea is this volume you can see in the image, made of black concrete, that suffers a strange cut on the corner, showing violently the white interior, like a section of a project. At the same time the small plot is partially built, while a vertical patio, connected to the commercial street, occupies almost a half of the lot.

The store interior defines itself in conjunction with its transparencies. At the backside of the patio, a volume in dark crystal gives depth to the dimension of the space. The floor made of recovered wood lends age to the space. Those same planks are used on the outside space, thus creating a feeling of a floor to the soil rather than to the building. In the side that faces Rua Oscar Freire a patio border the limits of the plot. Read More…

Leaf House in Brazil by Mareines + Patalano Arquitetura

This project was inspired by Brazil’s Indian architecture, perfectely suited for the hot and humid climate where it stands, Rio de Janeiro .The roof acts as a big leaf that protects from the hot sun all the enclosed spaces of the house, such as the verandas and the in-between open spaces. These last two types of space are the main social areas, the essence of the design. They allow trade winds from the sea to pass trough the building, providing natural ventilation and passive cooling.

Bali Net Zero Hotel|Spa by Christine Hadiningrat & Sauter Carbon Offset Design

Christine Hadiningrat in collaboration with Sauter Carbon Offset Design present the Bali Net Zero Hotel Resort & Spa; The first Zero Carbon 5 Star Hotel in the world that’s also a Solar Power Generating Plant for the local community. Acting as a power station during the day, the surplus energy that is generated by the Hotel’s solar panels which collect more than double the required amount to run the hotel, is sold to neighbors. By generating and selling this surplus electricity by day, the Hotel is able to offset the electricity they will consume from the grid by night. In this way, there is no need for an expensive storage system where returning power to the grid is not an option.

Werf House in Cape Winelands, South Africa by Van Der Merwe Miszewski Architects

The Project site (±10 HA) is located in the heart of the Franschhoek Valley, between the road into Franschhoek, (the north boundary of the site), and the Berg river (the south boundary of the site). There were two existing structures on the site; a 1920’s house and a barn dating from ± the 18th century.

The scope of this proposal included the re-utilization of the barn, which is more or less centrally located on the site and is surrounded by several magnificent and ancient Oak trees.

Juniper House in Gotland, Sweden by Hans Murman Architects

In Gotland, Sweden the house designed by Hans Murman Architects, the Juniper House becomes barely visible, mirroring its surroundings with its façade. A wall of glass from ceiling to floor stands towards the minimal yard. From the interior you have a strong feeling of being in the nature. Both light and the path “flow” through the house and a terrace of white local limestone separates the kitchen from the master bedroom.

The façade is a playful comment to the Gotland authority’s ambition to not let modern architecture be visual in the landscape. It is also an experiment and investigation in what you see and do not see of a house and how this affects you and how you experience colour, texture, surface, material, transparency, inside contra outside light on and through the façades. Casa Jondal by Jaime Serra from Atlant Del Vent

Casa Jondal was designed by Jaime Serra from Atlant Del Vent and it’s located in Ibiza, Spain. The Ibiza dream house is a home perfectly adapted to its environment and modern necessities. Occupying 380 square meters, the residence captures the barrier between Spanish rustic style elements of architecture and modern design elements.

Two large volumes were adjoined to shape a structure that displays concrete bricks on the outside and ceramic bricks on the inside. The 485 square meters Mediterranean-style courtyard exploits the outside space as a continuation of the inside space.
