MOMO,Modernistiskt Modulhuskoncept by Thomas Lind

MOMO or which means “modern module house concept” is a modernistic modular house concept designed by Swedish architect Thomas Lind.MOMO’s modular prefab units come in flat packs but must be assembled by an experienced builder.

Lind doesn’t claim that the 10-square-meter (107 sq. ft.) modules are deep green, though their small size certainly helps. He says they are “high quality and healthy materials” mainly solid wood using traditional stains outside and whitewash on inner walls.

Douglas House by Richard Meier

The Douglas House design by one of our favorite architects, Richard Meier is based on the shores of Lake Michigan. The house is one of several spectacular residences Richard Meier completed early in his career and that helped to solidify his reputation. The whiteness and pure geometry of the house stand in sharp contrast to the pine trees that surround it. The openness of the plan and the glass elevations ensure dramatic lake and shoreline views throughout.

Jai House by Lorcan O’Herlihy

O’Herlihy is known for his never-say-die attitude toward building on precipitous, even dangerous hillside plots and on hemmed-in slices of earth like his the vertical house. Lorcan is the master of getting it done, getting things accomplished against all odds, all obstacles.

Jai House sits on a gently sloping site overlooking the Santa Monica Mountains. It is a study of the interaction between building and landscape and celebrates architecture through removal, stripping away visual and spatial excess, revealing an authenticity of construction and craft. The building is designed to blur the boundary between landscape and structure, with, for example, the pool and deck acting as an extension of the living room.

House RR, São Paulo by Andrade Morettin Arquitetos

The RR house in Sao Paulo by the Brazilian Andrade Morettin Arquitetos lies close to the sea in a humid climate surrounded with thick vegetation.

The quasi-industrial feel of the generous 220-square meter house is offset by the towering wall of greenery that surrounds it, and the inside-outside feel of a platform in the jungle is enhanced by the hammocks hung casually on the wooden frame.

A combination of full-height wooden and glass opening screens allow these compartments to become part of the main double-height living area, six meters high, which in turn can be opened up to the outside world. Pre-fabrication kept costs down and speeded up construction and means the entire structure sits lightly on its idyllic site.

Alan Family House Extension by NMDA

The clients for this house renovation/extension are a couple with three daughters who act as a creative, democratic unit.
The family asked that 1,000 sq ft be added to the site in addition to the existing 1,000 sq ft house. They also asked that the architecture serve to articulate their identity as a “family brand” that is unique to their unit.

Mr. Denari’s first impulse was to chop away the front and back of the house and add new rooms, but that proved too costly. Instead, he left the front unchanged and created a 1,050-square-foot addition that capitalized on the neglected backyard, seven feet below street level.

Centro das Artes, Casa das Mudas in Calheta, Madeira by Paulo David

Paulo David’s Centro das Artes, Casa das Mudas is based in Portugal’s Madeira island. It remains the memory of the unexpected angles, the cut of the volumes against the loaming landscape, the frames resting on the interior light, the strength of the texture and richness of the stone, the confrontations between the opaque darkness and the transparent light of the glass.
