Paper Sculptures by Irving Harper

Irving Harper is this week’s featured designer in the Herman Miller Why Design series. The film is a rare opportunity to feature one of the most prolific designers who helped shape American Modernism. As design director for the Nelson Office, Irving Harper was responsible for some of the most compelling and iconic designs of the twentieth century—from the Marshmallow sofa, to the Ball clock, to the Herman Miller logo itself. While working on the Chrysler Pavilion for the 1964 New York World’s Fair, he began making paper sculptures in his off hours to relieve stress. Some 50 years and roughly 500 pieces later, almost every surface of his Rye, New York home is besieged by evidence of his remarkable skill and creativity.

Green Pedestrian Crossing by Jody Xiong

Jody Xiong of DDB China in conjunction with the China Environmental Protection Foundation created ‘Green Pedestrian Crossing’ an outdoor campaign that creates a subtle visual reminder of the environmental benefits of walking versus driving.
The campaign involved laying a canvas 12.6 metres long by 7 metres wide on the ground, thus covering the pedestrian crossing with a large leafless tree. On either side of the road, beneath the traffic lights, were placed sponge cushions soaked in green, environmentally friendly, washable paint.

As pedestrians walked towards the crossing, they stepped on the green sponge, thus leaving green foot imprints on the canvas of the tree. Each ‘green’ footprint on the canvas looked like leaves growing on a bare tree, which made people feel that by walking they could create a greener environment. The ‘Green Pedestrian Crossing’ was carried out across 7 thoroughfares in Shanghai. The campaign was then extended to 132 roads across 15 cities in China, with a participation exceeding 3,920,000 people.

Kinetic Rain by ART+COM

Berlin firm ART+COM has recently completed this art installation for the departure hall of Terminal 1 at Changi Airport, Singapore. Thin steel wires and lightweight aluminum covered with copper were used to create the 608 rain droplets. Suspended from thin steel ropes above the two opposing escalators, each droplet is moved precisely and seemingly floating by a computer-controlled motor hidden in the halls ceiling. The drops follow a 15-minute, computationally designed choreography where the two parts move together in unison, sometimes mirroring, sometimes complementing, and sometimes responding to each other.

Robert Buelteman begins by painstakingly whittling down flowers, leaves, sprigs, and twigs with a scalpel until they’re translucent. He then lays each specimen on color transparency film and, for a more detailed effect, covers it with a diffusion screen. Read More…
