Danish-born Mathias Bengtsson (b. 1971), who resides in London and Stockholm, created the Slice chair concept, which weds organic shapes with cutting-edge technology, in 1999. Slice began as a hand-modeled clay form that blurs a chair’s distinction between armrests, backrest, legs and frame. The organic shape was sliced into horizontal layers, digitally manipulated, formed again by a laser cutter, and then hand assembled and polished.

Foliage Sofa by Patricia Urquiola for Kartell

Patricia Urquiola has introduced the new quilted sofa called Foliage designed for the Italian manufacturer Kartell.

Dialogue between natural realities and artificial Foliage, the sofa clearly bears the graphic hallmark of Patricia Urquiola as an object that looks as if it just grew naturally in plastic. The leaves form a crown resting on a framework of branches which virtually form a seat. Foliage is a sofa with great personality featuring a seat with top-stitched embroidery on four round legs. Cosy and soft, Foliage offers two roomy seats. The top-stitching runs over the entire surface and on the back too making the sofa a standalone piece that can be placed even in the centre of a room and seen from all sides.

Green Islands by Jean-Marie Massaud

For the Swedish publisher Offecct, Jean-Marie Massaud has designed the “Green Islands.” Green Islands can be described as an ottoman with room for vegetation, and by integrating a higher plant inside Green Islands, a relaxing feeling of sitting as under a tree is created. The key is that the vegetation is part of the furniture. Green Islands can be described as an island – or a kind of a refuge – that when placed in a public interior invite you to a moment of contemplation or a quiet conversation. Read More…

The Watson Table by Paul Loebach

Watson Table designed by paul loebach wich will be presented at Milan Design week 2011.

The Watson table is named after James Watson, the American scientist famous for discovering the helical structure of DNA. I felt like a scientist developing this table, working through numerous controlled material experiments to achieve the desired result. The closer I came to the solution, the simpler the experiments became, and the final result is a wood-composite structure laminated over a simple 6-part plywood mold.

The form is inspired by English furniture of the late 1600′s, with its distinctive open wood turnings, sometimes called ‘barley twists’. I was interested in translating these twisting shapes into bold structural elements, for the purpose of experimenting with new combinations of materials and construction processes.

To use materials as efficiently as possible I abandoned a machining-based approach in favor of an ‘additive’ lamination process. I began to experiment with composite materials to give structural support to this naturally ‘springy’ form; the result is a combination of wood and carbon fiber, with a painted wood top. This composite ‘sandwich’ utilizes the inherent rigidity of carbon as a structural core, creating a symbiotic composition providing a maximum of strength using a minimum of material.

“Metamorphosis” Bookshelf by Sebastian Errazuriz

Metamorphosis shelf by the famous designer Sebastian Errazuriz really goes out on a limb. The inspiration for the limited-edition Baltic birch plywood shelf which is hand-carved by the Italian company Horm came from his grandmother’s ivy-covered garden.

Errazuriz said:

“The dark branches that crawled along the walls were so thick that I would use them as natural shelves for my garden toys,”

Tree Bookcase by Shawn Soh

This concept behind the design came from Shawn Soh’s early memories of sticking letters on tree branches. Unlike a regular bookshelf, Tree Bookshelf’s branch-shaped ‘shelves’ are very forgiving, meaning that books don’t need to be put back neatly. The organic nooks and crannies are perfect for tucking away toys and treasures too.

Rather than using wood for the design, which involves a ton of cutting and wasting of trees, Shawn decided to use steel, which is durable and easy to recycle. Each bookshelf takes one week to produce and every process including the welding and bending is done by hand. Read More…
