Tantangan Villa in Bali by Word of Mouth

Villa Tantangan is a single family residence built in private Nyanyi Beach, in west coast of Bali. The residence is overlooking the Indian Ocean to the west and a natural river system to the north. The layout of the villa attempts to capture these spectacular views wherever possible, and really connect the interior spaces with the natural environment.

The remote “off the grid” location of the villa required the implementation of several ‘green’ initiatives, to enable the villa to operate self-sufficiently. The design utilises a layout whereby the buildings are formed aroundthe central courtyard, creating intimate internal spaces between the buildings, and more open spaces towards the perimeter. The buildings are situated on different levels of the land and are treated like giant planter boxes, each with a rooflandscaped by either natural vegetation or ponds.

3M House in Austria by Destilat Architecture
The woodside property which slopes down steeply to the Danube lies at the foot of the Pöstlingberg surrounded by woods, fields and orchards. The forest protection zone and the development plan only allow the building to be situated in the north-eastern part of the property.

The objective was to integrate into the building concept, the uniqueness of the forest edge location, to ensure a simultaneous separation from the settlement while staging the view over the Danube Valley and over to the foothills of the Alps. The building’s floor plan is marked by the building windows and, following the topography, is stepped into split levels, which play with the surrounding outdoor space.

An exposed concrete body with flagged surface forms the center of the house. It penetrates the split levels staggered around it and is noticeably set into scene throughout the house by the surrounding constructions. Read More…

Westcliff Pavilion by GASS Architecture Studios

GASS Architecture Studios completed the Westcliff Pavilion based in Johannesburg, South Africa. The facade of the house is just incredible, it combines modernity with roughness of the stones.
GASS Architecture Studios say:
The cottage at 28A Pallinghurst is a steel-framed pavilion structure located on the Westcliff Ridge in Johannesburg, South Africa. This 2 bedroom dwelling, nestled away in its wooded surroundings, is positioned just before the inception of a major sheer face of the Westcliff Ridge. This affords the building a private, tranquil hiding place in the trees juxtaposed with a feeling of floating above the ridge combined with magnificent views of Johannesburg.
Steel framing was a natural choice of construction method, as it married the environmental and access requirements to the desired architectural aesthetic. Simply put, we wanted a structure that would touch the Ridge as lightly as possible combined with an elegant, timeless aesthetic that would allow us to use the steel elements not only as primary structural elements, but also as the primary architectural motif. From an environmental perspective, access to the site is quite complex, having to traverse down a very long, narrow driveway through several people’s private properties, and half way down to the ridge to the site itself over an existing garden. Because of this, we wanted to bring in as few construction vehicles as possible, especially large concrete trucks. Read More…

Ridge Road Residence by StudioFour
Rested on South Dakota’s hills, the Ridge Road Residence were built by architectural firm StudioFour. Covered with black timber and dark reflective glass the Ridge Road house subtly adapts his architecture to the topography of the valley along the slope and blends within surrounding landscape . Designed to separate the private and public areas of the residence, the kitchen, dining and living rooms blend into one fluid space while the bedrooms are situated in a more private area of the house to keep calm and serenity while others are making noise in the public areas.

A simple brief and programming requirements, teamed with a dramatic site characterised by a steep slope and a single tea tree, enabled the design to become an exploration into enclosing the basic rituals of domestic life within restrained building forms…the form of the building becomes driven by the clients desire to separate the public and private zones of the residence.
In stark contrast to the surrounding houses, which attempt to cancel out the sloping topography by creating a podium level at which the outdoor areas sit exposed high above ground level, our design for this house adopts a gentler strategy, with the building form spilling down the slope to terminate in a series of terraced decks.
Shakin Stevens House, Australia by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design
‘Shakin Stevens’ House by Matt Gibson Architecture + Design is not only about a coloured front door but the experience of what’s beyond it. Conceptually beyond this green door, there are no doors; the newer space is about flow and continuity where delineation of space is soft nd less finite than expected from the street.
In a clear formal idea the rear composes 3 extruded white cubes that look essentially like they have been let go, landing like dice randomly on top of each other next to a Victorian ‘monopoly’) house. The 3 cubes, as with the existing villa, are composed so as to be immediately deciphered internally or externally and in clear programmatic zones all house different functions.

Bundle House, Project by Keyla Hernandez & Jason Orbe-Smith

Designed Keyla Hernandez & Jason Orbe-Smith as part of Hernan Diaz Alonso’s Spring 2012 XLAB studio at SCI-Arc, the ‘Bundle House’ explores curvature and line becomes part of the landscape, moving along with it. The house is composed of series of different formal curve languages created with empathy towards one another.

The ground is first interpreted as a grid and then deformed through a series of disruptions in this linear system in order to create topography and rhythm in a previously flat site. Enclosures and apertures are generated by the density of linework, offering both privacy and filtered views to the exterior landscape. Read More…
