Virtue of Blue Chandelier by Jeroen Verhoeven

Virtue of Blue Chandelier created by Jeroen Verhoeven is adorned with 502 blue butterflies made of solar panels cut into the shapes of four different breeds of butterfly.

“Another remarkable element of the chandelier is that it is self-sustaining; like real butterflies, which use the rays of the sun to raise their own body temperatures, the wings of the chandelier butterflies absorb energy during daylight hours to provide power for the light they surround.”

“Growing Vases,” Pendant Lighting by Lasvit

Japanese designers Nendo in collaboration with Fabio Novembre have designed these hand-blown glass lights with the blowers pipe still attached, for Czech lighting company Lasvit.

Nendo was asked to create something out of glass that was fresh and new, evoking the idea of new possibilities. They playfully created an installation that utilized the metal pipes used by glassblowers, still attached tot he objects they were used to make, however they turned the pipes into flowers and branches. The glass, then, became the vases in which these flowers were held “making flowers blooming in vases into vases blooming from flowers to represent the flower bulbs that draw nutrients from plants through photosynthesis and store new life. Protea, Pendant Lamp by Karl Zahn


Protea pendant light created by Karl Zahn is thermotropic: meaning it moves away from heat. When the light is off, the petal-like lampshade is cold and closed around the bulb. When the lamp is turned on and heats up, the thermotropic petals gradually move away from the hot bulb.
In a closed state (i.e. the light is off), the shade is cold and hugs the bulb closely. When the lamp is turned on, the petals move away from the hot bulb. It is a lot of work keeping cool, so they like it when you blow on them.
