The Snow Cycle
This winter snow bicycle or snow cycle was Designed in Oberndorf, Austria, and is actually the snow bicycle that set the Guinness World Record for the longest vertical drop of 107,400′ in 11 hours and can reach top speeds of 66 mph. The latest version of this winter snow bicycle or “sit-ski,” features in-line, twin-skis and a powder-coated steel frame as well as a front elastomer/spring suspension that assists riders in initiating turns with the front ski, controlled with an adjustable t-bar steering column.

The Snow Cycle uses two main front and back skis for steering, with foot-mounted blades for stabilization. Luckily, a padded seat is also included, should you hit any debris and/or children. Steering is accomplished with an adjustable t-bar (and a good sense of balance). And in case you were worried, Hammacher Schlemmer assures that the ride “withstands the battering of snow, ice, and meltwater.” Phew! This sounds much more durable than my cardboard and glass sled from last year. If you can manage to stay on the thing, it looks like it would be a hell of a good time.

A 6-speed manual and automatic are on offer with the LS3 V8.
Price for the model pictured here is 180,000 US dollars, or 128,000 euros.

Skateboard Sporting Sails

Skateboard Sporting Sails add a whole new dimension to downhill skateboarding. Weighing less than 8 ounces, the SPORTING-SAIL floats like a feather behind the rider during the entire descent and most enjoyed when deployed. The benefits of using a SPORTING-SAIL allows downhill riders to experience an ultimate sense of control on steeper, more challenging terrain with lighter, smaller, more responsive set-ups (not limited to longboards), while at the same time trains riders to examine overlooked carving scenarios in a stand-up position.

Boeing Team’s Innovative SUGAR Volt Concept
Boeing’s team came up with several Subsonic Ultra Green Aircraft Research (SUGAR) concepts, including this one, the SUGAR Volt. The most noticeable element of the design is that the wings are long and skinny–longer from tip to tip, and shorter from leading edge to trailing edge–and as a result, truss-braced.
The innovative SUGAR Volt concept is driven by an electric battery gas turbine hybrid propulsion system that can reduce overall fuel usage by 70%.

Flowlab Skateboard by Mike Simonian & Pieter Schouten

Mike Simonian in collaboration with Pieter Schouten have made this skateboard in order to add the flexibility of snowboarding movements to skateboarding. Rather than having four wheels, the Flowlab sports 14 arranged in a set of curved parallel lines. They allow you to lean far into each turn, treating the skateboard almost like a snowboard. A traditional skateboard can lean up to 25 degrees, while a Flowlab ups that to 45 degrees.

Terrestrial Shrub Rover by Justin Shull

Terrestrial Shrub Rover fits easily into a number of environments ranging from suburbia to the urban forest, offering a green option for short distance travel. It is a solar-powered vehicle that looks, as you may have guessed, exactly like a large shrub.
According to Shull, “In the spirit of NASA and its forthcoming 2020 lunar expeditions in preparation for colonizing the moon, the Terrestrial Shrub Rover presents the opportunity to explore terrestrial and social environments back on Earth from within a manned, foliage bedecked, solar electric powered rover.”
Solar Plane Completes Historic 24-Hour Flight
An experimental solar-powered plane landed safely last Thursday after completing its first 24-hour test flight, proving that the aircraft can collect enough energy from the sun during the day to stay aloft all night.
Pilot Andre Borschberg eased the Solar Impulse onto the runway at Payerne airfield about 30 miles southwest of the Swiss capital Bern at exactly 9 a.m. (3 a.m. EDT) Thursday.
Helpers rushed to stabilize the pioneering plane as it touched down, ensuring that its massive 207-foot wingspan didn’t scrape the ground and topple the craft.

Foldable Bike by Kevin Scott
Kevin Scott has designed a unique bike that wraps around a lamp post so it can be locked-up safely – without the need for a lock or chain. The frame can be ratcheted tight to allow the bike to be ridden like a normal bike and can be quickly loosened to allow the frame to be bent back on itself. The design allows the bike to be stored in small spaces. As the bike bends to lock onto itself, there’s no need for a chain.

Terrafugia Transition “Flying Car” Gets Go-Ahead from US Air Authorities

The Terrafugia Transition, a light aircraft that can convert into a road-legal automobile, is to go into production after being given a special weight exemption by the US Federal Aviation Administration. The Transition was designed as a ‘light sport’ aircraft, the smallest kind of private aeroplane under FAA classification.

But the manufacturers found it impossible to fit the safety features that are required for road vehicles into that weight. Uniquely, however, the FAA has granted the Terrafugia Transition an exemption – allowing it to be classified as a light sport aircraft despite being 120lb over the limit.
