Streetwalk by Charlie Davidson Studio

British designer Charlie Davidson recently created a collection of stools for the city of Sunderland. Check out what the designer had to say about the project:

A commission won through an open call for artists from Sunniside Partnership, the acting body in charge of revitalising the Sunniside area of Sunderland. Charlie Davidsons original proposal was for a series of benches that had the appearance of walking. This idea was a direct response to the brief which asked designers to draw pedestrians into the east side of town and the newly furbished Sunniside gardens from Sunderland city centre.

The original designs were too big for the finalized street layout so the designs were developed into a stool module. The final design is cast in a polymer based cement with coloured quartz and marble aggregate.

“Purposefulness of Shadow” Chair by John Leung & Clarke Hopkins Clark Architects

Shadow is purposeful. Not only does this two dimensional adumbration create graphical cues, the shaded space between the shadow and the object also has numerous purposes. Architects have always been particularly fascinated by the use of shadow and shade in space. The architects who designed this chair aim to draw attention to the purposefulness of this humble but ubiquitous phenomenon of relative scarcity of light (or the relative abundance of darkness).

Jalis Sofa by Jehs-Laub for COR

Jalis, taken from the Arabic, is the magical word for relaxed communication, comfortable in any circumstances. Cushions side by side – like stories told one after another. Special upholstery provides support and fabulous comfort. No less unusual than the concept itself is the new cover fabric Patio with woven-in ornaments, developed by the rohi textile manufacturing company. Only becoming visible when the incidence of light changes, its patterns seem almost three-dimensional and resemble fine embroidery. Create oases of well-being: the upholstered furniture range is an all-round talent that can float, rest on pedestals, integrate or highlight tables, change levels, and incorporate niches and floor recesses.

Trash Cube Pouf by Nicolas Le Moigne

Trash Cube seating designed Nicolas Le Moigne is made from the fiber cement scraps and produced by Swiss manufacturer Eternit.

Known for their popularity in the production of roofing materials and facades, the Eternit company makes strong, durable materials out of cements and fibers. While the end products get whisked away for architectural projects, there is still an awful lot of waste. Designer Nicolas Le Moigne, also from Switzerland, thought about the making recycled stools out the scraps unused from the production phase. Instead of seeing the scraps as trash, he sees each Trash Cube stool as an artistic form with what Abitare calls a “strong, poetic soul that could be part of a collection of Arte Povera artworks”.

Lost in Sofa by Daisuke Motogi Architecture

Daisuke Motogi Architecture presented this armchair for holding and hiding things at DesignTide Tokyo 2010 earlier this week. Things often get lost under the sofa. It’s ordinary for a coin to slip out of your pocket, or a never-to-be-found remote to be accidentally found in between the sofa cushions. With this idea in mind, Daisuke Motogi Architecture took this concept and ran with it.
